Subject: USB issues? Upgrade your BIOS!

I've been having problems getting my laptop (IBM T30) to recognize the Neuros while my desktop worked fine.

Symptoms usually include the Neuros hanging and all sorts of usb-storage errors in dmesg.

I upgraded the BIOS on my laptop today and after that I could mount my Neuros just fine. Normally Linux ignores the BIOS of a system when it starts up, but there may be some firmware updates to the USB subsystem that are still used.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that the bios version could affect the operation of the usb. USB is a complicated beast.

While itis true that a BIOS update might fix your USB problems, it really should be treated as 2nd to last step* due to the real possibility of lobotomizing your motherboard if anything serious goes wrong during the update...

* The last step being upgrading the motherboard or buying a new USB expansion card.

ROM Flash updates are scary things. That's why we all keep our Neuros plugged in during a firmware update, right?

Yeah, but remember that BIOS upgrades sometimes don't fix USB problems as Chameleon mentioned. 9 times out of 10 for Windows users it will be a driver upgrade and for Linux users a kernel upgrade to fix the problem.
