After ordering my new hard drive and wondering how many songs I could fit onto it (bought a 30gb hitachi travelstar from www.basoncomputers.com), i got to wondering...

1) What are the advantages of Ogg Vorbis?
2) Does Winamp/WMP support Ogg Vorbis?
3) How do I convert mp3s to Ogg Vorbis?
4) Is it hard to configure my Neuros to play Ogg Vorbis?
5) Are Ogg Vorbis files smaller?
6) Will I experience better sound quality with Ogg Vorbis?

im sure i have more questions, but I cannot think of them at the moment. I was just wondering what the difference between mp3 and Ogg Vorbis was.

Thanks in advance,
Alan

Please correct me if I am wrong guys...
1) The main strength is that it has smaller file sizes with lower bitrates when compared to mp3. I've noticed about a 10mb difference in a 192 VBR mp3 and a q5 Ogg.

2) Winamp5 has Ogg support, I believe. WMP has no Ogg support, I believe. Foobar2000 can play anything

3) Please, for the love of god, don't do this! The reason you do not want to convert from mp3 to Ogg is because they are both lossy formats. This means that your Oggs will be of poorer quality when compared to your mp3s. Make rips from the original source, if possible. Barring this, I use Foobar2000 for all of my conversions.

4) No configuration necessary. Mp3s and Oggs play just the same.

5) Once again, in my experience, yes. A bit smaller for about the same quality. This is very apparent in the lower bitrate range.

6) This is a very very very subjective question. I hear little difference between my q5 Oggs and 192 VBR mp3s. I do see the 10mb difference, though.

The main difference between mp3 and Ogg is the encoding scheme. Also, Ogg is open source while mp3 is kinda open source.

Hi.

Its important to note that you really only want to convert to Ogg if you’re a converting right from the source file( Like a commercial CD )

Converting files that are already Mp3 won’t improve the sound quality.

I think that the best program for converting is Dbpoweramp. Below is the link to the program to download and the codec to covert ogg.

Install the program first then the ogg codec.

http://www.americantechpushers.com/programs/dbpamp.exe
http://www.americantechpushers.com/programs/dBogg.exe

Winamp 5 does play ogg as it is my player of choice..

The Neuros won’t have any trouble playing ogg files, just make sure you have the latest firmware updates.

I've noticed that Windows and many media programs do not read Ogg tags very well, if at all. This is a little frustrating.

I also recently discovered that Adobe Premiere does not import Ogg audio files. GRRR!

That's up to you. You could make the files smaller and get the same quality, or make them the same size and get higher quality.

How much difference there is depends on which mp3 encoder (and to a smaller extent, which Ogg encoder) you are comparing.

There is also a difference in how the encoding is generally specified.
With mp3 you usually give an option for a specific constant or average/variable bit rate.. 128 kilobits/second is common.
With ogg you usually specify a quality level (Q value) and the bit rate that comes from that depends on the music you are encoding.

To generalize, ogg q 0 is around 64 kb/s, q 4 is around 128 kb/s, and q 1 is probably equivalant quality to a 128 kb/s mp3 on a good encoder.

Other consideration: if you want to be able to play songs on other appliances, like a CD or DVD player that does mp3, then you might want to go that way. There is at least one brand DVD player (KISS) that will play oggs.

Alan, are you secretly trying to rewrite the Vorbis FAQ?

Looks like you've gotten some good responses here, but many of your questions are also answered in the FAQ if you're still looking for more into.

ok at anything above 192 the human ear wont notice the sound quality so an mp3 or ogg above 192 you wont hear the difference, but I think you can hear a difference between the two formats. That being said I do encode at q7 around 224k with ogg with the aoTuV beta encoder. But as people mentioned oggs at lower bitrates sound comparable to higer bitrate mp3s and that is where you will save hard drive space. 128k is near cd quality for mp3 but I read 64k for ogg now I havent verified this my self.

WMP does play ogg but you have to get a plugin and even then its not great winamp and foobar is much much better anyways. On a side note for those who use nero there is a plugin for nero to burn ogg files. It is not difficult to configure Neuros to play ogg vorbis just a firmware upgrade will do and the right version of the software.

it is a bad idea to transcode, but dbpoweramp is the best program to use.

Um, how exactly is MP3 kinda open source? There are royalty fees necessary to do _anything_ with mp3, that doesn't sound very open to me.

Since a lot of people have suggested Foobar2002 as their player of choice and its freeware, I am providing direct download links to those wishing to check out the program and here it is.

Hi amazing..

The prgrams are freeware and not for sale. so Re-distribution is allowed as long has certian critera is meet

For example:

http://www.foobar2000.org/license.html

If it was sharware or even programs that had spyware on them I would not host on our server.

You are missing the distinction between open source and free.. also how the patent system works.

To get a patent, which is how you get to charge royalties even if someone indepently duplicates your invention, you have to disclose how it works. 17 years after the patent date (in the US) the patent expires and the invention is free to anyone.

You can keep how it works secret and charge for it. If someone discovers how it works without using inside information then they can produce it without any royalty fees. That's why some products (especially software) have license provisions against reverse engineering. That's them reminding you that as a customer you have a copy of the program and documentation that contains "inside information" which you are agreeing not to use to reproduce their secrets.

More then you wanted to know.. but bottom line is there *can* be open source code subject to royalties.
