Message:
Ok, it is official.
Neuros is having a party at the office. Saturday July 24, roughly from 6-9 PM. Very very casual and simple. Some beer, soda, Vodka, maybe some chips.
Your Neuros will serve as your invite and feel free to bring a friend. Should be very fun. If you have modified your Neuros in any way, you should definately come, as we'd love to see the types of things people are doing.
We are located right in the heart in downtown Chicago. The physical address is 2 N. Riverside Plaza. Any train (Metra or the el) or bus will get you here. There's some parking around the area too.
Write to me if you need more info.
But really, you should all come. Make a trip out of it, Chicago in the summer is a great time.

Message: Awesome, I just wish I was able to make it. Chicago is a nice town to visit, but it's just too time consuming/costly to get over there from Minneapolis for a party. Otherwise I would love to meet the DI crew in person and see what kind of geeks other Neuros owners are.
Please either set up a webcam or post some pictures after the event.

Message: I sent this to Lou, maybe others would find it helpful re Chicago, our location and transportation:
People fly into O'hare, which is one of the largest airports in the world.
In terms of transportation, "all roads lead to Rome", meaning all public transportation takes you to downtown, so the "Blue Line El" would go right from O'hare to downtown, just 5 blocks away. But there is also the cab option, which would probably be about $30?
----
The other airport is Midway, which is a little farther, but again, all roads lead to Rome and the orange line comes to downtown also.
Now for those of us who are local, we take the Metra, the actual Choo choo train, and that can zip you in from any suburb ever, and bring you in right across the street from the office.

if there is no need for an external antenna and you might be willing to sell a few then i wouldnt mind waiting a bit to get a neuros II. but of course you wouldnt do that since it is illegal.

Is the reasoning for this to get around Microsoft's submarine patent and ensuing fees on FAT32 pre-formatted media?

Message: Not even fat32; FAT with extended file names in it. This would apply equally well to fat16 or even fat12. A floppy disc with lowercase file name capability, for instance.
It's not even the formatting; that shouldn't change from vanilla FAT to extended MS-FAT, but the contents of the FAT entries themselves. The ability to view files in any way with long file names would do it.
(I hope Neuros isn't hit by this. If so, they should just enforce everything use the old 8.3 names that exist for that reason. The device could get away with it, as the end user almost never sess any file names. NSM is a Windows app, so it must have permission to write MS-FAT entries.)

Eh, that would make the "portable hard drive" aspect a whole lot less appealing.
quote: Originally posted by Lou Erickson NSM is a Windows app, so it must have permission to write MS-FAT entries.
Knowing what little I do about .NET, I don't think they'll be able to explicitly save the files in 8.3. Especially given that A) C# is supposed to be really portable, and extensions to that effect reduce that portability, and B) Microsoft will have wanted to leave that functionality out to enforce its patent.
I was thinking about this last night... there was an application that could read an ext2 filesystem written for Windows. However, it hadn't been maintained recently. This would be the only real hurtle preventing the Neuros from using an open-source filesystem, completing its open stance entirely. (Oh, Macs too, but didn't FreeBSD support ext2 as well?)
I wish I knew the hooks to create a new "drive" in Windows (eg My Computer -> NEUROS (F:) -> music (etc)) without using a built-in filesystem. I'm sure a driver could read ext2 on the fly... I'd help write it if I could just get past this step.

Replied on: 07/20/2004 5:42:35 PM
Message: Ah, but the "portable hard disc" aspect wouldn't be bothered. And, NSM wouldn't have to create only the 8.3 names... just to let the drivers ensure they are present. The disc would have to be formatted plain vannilla FAT32. The patent - if I understand correctly, and this may not be true - covers the extending of FAT to include long filenames, spaces, etc.
So, as long as nothing internal to the Neuros depended on or parsed that data, it should avoid the patent problems. The data can be there harmlessly, as long as a non-patent holder doesn't try and manipulate it.
I think.
(And adding a disk like that is hard, or it'd have been done before. Two minutes with Google found me three tools to cope with Ext2/3 from Windows, including 95/98.)
Back on topic (sorry!) I'll be at the party this weekend. Yay!

Message: The HD in the Neuros is actually unformatted, RAW data.
There is some IC within that translates the RAW data to/from some type of FAT filesystem, likely VFAT or compatible.
Unfortunately, the Neuros cannot possibly use any other file system because it essentially is hardware locked into FAT.

Message: Then how does Linux read the filesystem with the vfat mount option? Unless it's reading it through the same chip... and that seems unlikely, since the drive can be accessed without the "brain" attatched, and there's flash as well as the HD, so to support the two modes you'd need two of these chips, one in the brain and one in the backpack, which doesn't seem economical. Unless I'm misunderstanding you. Let me phrase this differently. If I removed the drive from the backpack, popped it in a computer, formatted it with valid FAT32, then put it back in the backpack, would the Neuros be able to read the filesystem? More over, would it be able to read its particular variant of the FAT filesystem? ... perhaps I should start another topic. I'll do that now. (Edit: Tada. http://www.neurosaudio.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4164 )

People have taken the hard disk out, and plugged it into a computer, and accessed the data. That seems to argue against the above...

They are doing some big network stuff today at DI, so I am not able to check email. If you need directions or help or have questions, call my office phone 312-601-6514 and I will check messages pre-party.
Door opens at 6. I really encourage anyone on the fence to come, the party will probably be pretty small, which is actually cool, because then we can go back to the DI office and Joe can show off some of the stuff he's been thinking about and tinkering with - and things are just more likely to get out of hand with a smaller group anyway. I will probably replace the insides with Neuros II guts, maybe even switch out the buttons for black buttons... black buttons with transparent case would look awesome. I may even make a hole for USB 2.0 (w/ led) guts for the backpack and on the back of the wood I can put a spiral antenna.
If I want to get really fancy I could also put some LEDs inside the backpack, because this is transparent, it'd look really cool.

I had a great time both in Chicago and with the Neuros folks. The party was great. Kathryn (who, it already has been mentioned, has cool hair) tried to feed us to death and we, slackers that we are, left her with a bunch of extra food.
Let's see. Tim Artz was there, so was Michael Gao the Firmware God. There was the NSM guy too, who's name I fear I've managed to lose. Kathryn Born and Joe Born were both there. There were a couple of "Friends Of Neuros Audio", former NA folks who's names I've also lost. Shame on me! Am I missing any of the staff who came?
As far as customers, Jeff and Tabitha were there, as well as demonbane and NC-17. demonbane had a friend with him, who's name eludes me at the moment.
We met and talked of a lot of things. At 9pm we had to leave the conference room we were in, and we wound up wandering around to find a bar that was open, where we kept talking. After that - and the hinted at adventure of getting NC-17 to his train - we wandered around, and those of us still standing visited the Neuros Audio offices.
At about 1:30, things broke up, and I meandered back to my train (Kathryn, is the Picasso statue you were trying to get me to use as a landmark the big metal angel-like one or the strange bulbuous one that looks like a 70's fireplace? I did find them both...) which was late. Eventually I made it back to my hotel for three hours sleep, and then on to the airplane to San Jose.
All in all it was a great party, with some of the nicest folks I've talked to in a while. Lots of interesting discussion, most of which was friendly and rational.
It was great to meet you all, and I hope we can do it again!

Message: Matthias is very very jealous and thinks of opening a distribution channel to europe from his German headquarter, but isn't sure if this would work, because of the stupid FM-transmission restrictions inside the EU ... But he definitely wants to get this award, some day. He thinks, that's kind of a goal for life!
*This was written by Matthias girlfriend, since Matthias is ramming his head against the wall, because he is so jealous! *

Message: G'ah! I can't believe I missed this! This is what I get for going on vacation and not getting back to the Neuros forums until today. I could've been there. I would've had to head back to Ohio early the next morning, but still... I was even in Chicago on a layover the Saturday before on the way back from Denver, at Union Station.
Oh, well. If/when there's another, I'll be there. Just make sure someone e-mails me in case I wandered away from the board again!

Next time, we'll do the whole webcam thing, and link all the satellite parties in. That would be really fun.
And I gave my pics to Joe. I'll bug him to link them to this post.

Nope. It was the week before the party. I just got caught up with everything else today and got back to the forum.
K: Will do. I'm assuming the next one probably won't be until nearer to Christmas?

Please do send to all the Gamma members... I am near Seattle, but given enough advance notice, I could probably make it to Chicago.

Message: Well, I finally got my pictures back. Silly me, with the camera with film in it, I know. ("Film!", I hear you saying, "How quaint!") Sadly, the processing was lousy, and my photos are all grainy. Here's what we got:
There are some photos here: Directory - Fun with directory browsing.
The group of us or "The Geek Supper" =)
Let's see if I can remember all the names... no! If anyone knows who I've forgotten, post and fill me in... From the left, we have... someone facing away from the camera I've forgotten their name, Tim Artz the Master Of Support, Tabitha who is Jeff (cool4u2view)'s sweetie, Jeff Kriskie (cool4u2view), Laurence aka NC-17, Joe Born who invents things, two faces I've forgotten who are friends of the folks from DI (one on each side of the table), Michael Gao master programmer, and Kathryn Born, who fed us all and arranged this shindig.
Note that this was not at the DI offices, but as some space Kathryn rented for the party.
At The DI Office or "Wow, what a big sign!"
This was taken at the DI offices, after we left the nice space Kathryn rented (they threw us out at 9pm) and then some time drinking and rushing around to try and catach trains. We were running low on steam at this point, but it was cool to see the DI offices.
This picture has Tabitha, Jeff, Joe and Kathryn. I think that's the best picture of Joe I got.
Customer Of The Year
Here is Jeff being awarded the Customer Of The Year plaque. Look at the shiny-shiny thing, with the clear Neuros on it. Yay, Jeff!
Customer Of The Year 2
Here's the rest of that photo, with Tabitha looking on happily, and Laurence quietly envying. Not that I can blame him.
Neuros Staff
A shot of some of the Neuros staff. I think Tim was getting ready to leave and was unprepared for the camera. You can tell this is later in the party, as we're run out of mixer. =)
Kathryn Born
Here's a shot of the effervescent and amazing Kathryn Born, who brings life and drive to many things. She was taking pictures too, and her camera was a swell digital one. If you want a picture with me in it, it'll have to come from her. =)
Michael Gao
Other than this view of Michael smiling, this was a terrible picture, so I've cropped the rest of it out. I'm glad I got a good one with Michael looking at the camera, because I thought it would be nice to let everone see the Master Of The Firmware who does so much for us, and who has so many of the bugzilla bugs assigned to him.
Anyway, there's the photos I've got, and it was a very good party and trip.
Thanks again for having us, folks, and I look forward to another!
