In the era of anti-pirate music encoding, is there a limit to which sites to download from and will it be compatible for Nerous player? Will I run into any trouble on playback?

There is always a way to skin that cat. Most of the music services let you burn the music you've purchased to a CD, and of course after that, no more DRM, and you can do what you want with the music you've purchased.

I've purchased a few things from the ReadAudio store lately, which is nice because they're having their 49 cent sale right now. After downloading the album, I've burned it to a CD and then re-ripped to an Ogg file. Now I can do what ever I want with it, which in this case means loading the music on to my Neuros. With this method I also end up with a CD of the music, so I don't have to worry about loosing anything if my hard drive crashes.
