Maybe it's possible to have a 'code' or a Xi-menu button that would shut the screen off. Since a lot of people don't look at their screens while listening (pocket/lap/bag/working) this could save battery life.
I can pretty much create a playlist (on the fly) and put it in my pocket... so the screen is no use while it's in my pocket. But the battery is running for the LCD(although very little i presume) and also it's running for the Chip to calculate the info to display on the LCD.. presumably more power.

So is it unreasonable to ask that there'd be a manual screen shut-off/on mode (Preset#3 + HiSi looks to be a nice combo for that)

Thanks.

I honestly doubt this uses much power - think of the good old TI-83s that run off 4 AAs for years. I doubt the LCD uses an amount of power that would warrant adding this feature. After all, if it did, you'd likely see it in other players .

Even playing the music through the headphones takes little power. That's why the little iRiver 128 meg unit I have can play for 40+ hours on one AA. It's the hard drive that takes most of the power.

I think the 1.8" HDs take less power. When the NIII comes out... our prayers will be answered.

I've never had my Ti-83 run on 4 AAA's for "years". It lasts more like a year depending on usage. Speaking of calculators, does anyone know how long the batteries last in the TI-89?

depending on the use about a year. But for my different equations class about 4 days

Oh, don't say that; I will be in differential equations next semester.

Hrmm, mine lasted a long time... maybe not "years" per se but rather a year and a half or so. I kind of killed it by doing a lot of 3d graphing, though... which destroys the battery :P Drains real fast.

LCDs draw a miniscule amount of current- nA per square cm. If you want to save battery life, limit the backlight. Those can be a REAL power hog.
