Message: nice! I really appreciate your hard work and I think you are doing a very fine job with this!! I just kinda dislike this CVS interface... cvs is nice, but this sf-version is strange. at first those tags did not do what i wanted them to do. now they do as i want but it seems that it also updates slowly, as there is neither a new version of the changelog nor a new woid.hex. And the cvs interface i have on my pc (just the one integrated in my java IDE) does not show any of your files at all 'cause i have not found the "tag" option there at all...

yeah, GarBage has done so much on the progress of the open source firmware. the only thing that ive been able to change in the firmware is the version number... im so glad that he is making good progress on the firmware and is fixing many bugs and doing requests from bugzilla.

Message: Try re-downloading woid.hex. And check the filesize, should be about 1.7meg. Or get the woid.hex.bz2 (http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/neuros-firmware/neuros-firmware/source/DEBUGFLASHER/Debug/Attic/woid.hex.bz2?rev=1.1.2.2&only;_with_tag=garbage&view;=log) That way when you unzip the bz2 file it will definitely be the full file (winzip should do it).
I have had some problems with the download finishing early, redownloading usually fixes it.

Maybe you want to try the pre-release version i currently use myself. It is in Spanish (well, most of it is actually joke after joke). This release also features: - Bugzilla #213 (First 15 seconds not presettable) You can preset any point if the track is paused. If not, the preset will be applied to the start of the track. - Press rewind on the first 5 seconds of a song to go to the previous one (if not paused). - Tri-state MyFi. On, Off, and Auto-detect choices.
Here is the link. And here is the MD5SUM. It should read: 54ff01052431c39dd63b7ee3806432dd It will be ephimerous, though. So hurry on.

I was directed here to look for new firmware that makes it run better and all. I have spent 2 days now reading on Garbage's branch of Sourceforge, and I have but one simple question... HOW do I actually upgrade to the open source firmware? I am not looking to develop my own and I have downloaded the woid.hex files... but I have no clue how to make my Neuros actually take them. I understand that I am behind the times when it comes to Linux and I am trying to learn, but for now... is there anyone out there that can tell me simply, how to get this to work?

Message: well, I haven't used a USB 1.1 unit in a while, but my recollection is that it works the same. Turn on while holding the down position. The device should go into a special manual firmware upload mode. Then just copy the woid.hex file to the firmware subdirectory that you see on the device and then when it's done copying, just unplug the USB cable and it should detect the new firmware and prompt you to upgrade.

Message: Has anyone else noticed recording issues on GarBage's latest firmware? (2.26.1.6) I have 2 major problems:
1) Stopping a recording freezes on "Finishing Recording" and then I have to Up/Play the Neuros off. Recordings are not always added to the database, but are usually recorded to disk as normal. Even if added to the database, they are not always playable until downloaded to my computer.
2) After freezing and restarting, the device won't synch until I reload the firmware.

Is the little dot in the righthand corner blinking?
I actually modded the text in my firmware to say 'Saving...' on that screen so that I realize what it's doing.
Was this behavior not present in the official firmware?
Also, the sync thing...have you booted it up after doing the force-off key combo and then turned it back off (a clean shutdown), and finally back on? I think that this has worked for me if it stops talking to the computer. Otherwise you may want to try formatting the NAND.

With 2.25 it would "finish recording" and eventually return to the Recordings menu, sometimes taking its sweet time. With GarBage's the circle blinks, then eventually stops and freezes. All buttons are frozen, backlight does not respond. Never finishes.
quote: I have noticed similiar behavior on the end of a recording, and the circle does continue to blink, but it goes on for minutes and minutes. I finally gave up after probably 15 minutes.
The first time it happened I freaked out because I couldn't get it to synch even after I did things exactly as you descibe, including NAND reformat. And I couldn't upload firmware because the computer wouldn't see the drive. (found out that with brain removed, computer reads drive normally) Then realised that last firmware was still saved on HD, so reloaded it and presto, synching available.

It takes so _long_ to do the following, -- flush NAND cache back to HDD; -- close HDD file; -- add track into database; -- create sync request; -- update other related system information, DB changed, disk size flush etc.

Message: That bug is only noticed when updating the database, after the file was saved. So, AFAIK, no choice of losing a recording due to that bug.
In fact, after failing miserably to update the recording database the Neuros flags itself as having a 'pending update operation', on subsequents boot-ups it'll try to recover from that pending operation and will fail again when updating the database. The current workaround is to perform a NAND format. Pretty annoying, i must say. I located the bug, but ATM i'm not able to sort it out. I'll try and push my brains harder.
Thank you for testing and pointing out bugs, man.

You can do this with the Neuros but it takes like 7-8 clicks. It would be really nice if albums was the first selection, then it would pop up a list of artists... you click the artist, click the album then click the song. Much easier than Neuros audio->scroll down->albums->artist->album->song.

He will be able to tell if he could change it via the synch-manager or if it needs to be changed within the firmware!

Message: Hi I just updated the firmware of my Neuros II 30GB HD to Version 2.26.1.7.garbage
Thank you for your modifications... great stuff! I primarily use my Neuros for recording (mostly wav sometimes mp3)
One thing I noticed which could be a small bug...
After recording with mic or line-in, the recording is not shown under Neuros audio=>Recordings and cannot be played until Neuros is synchronized with NSM. The message "No records available!" is shown.
With the main firmware branch, after recording with mic or line-in, the new recording file is shown under Neuros audio=>Recordings and can be played without having to be synchronized with NSM
Before updating to this branch, I would listen to new recordings on the way home before synchronization with NSM... this is no longer possible with Version 2.26.1.7.garbage

I suspect it occurs if the recording is started from anything but the root menu, but i'm not sure. When I get a few min i'll see if I can duplicate it. Other times it doesn't reconignize the left side- although I suspect this to be a hardware issue with mine- anyone else experienceing this?

Message: I am a Neuros newbie. Could someone please help me. I'm trying to switch to GarBage's firmware. I was able to download woid.hex. Which directory do I save it into on my Neuros? Then, if I'm not mistaken, I have to hold DOWN and shut down, then hold DOWN and boot up, then shut down, then hold presets 1 and 5 and boot up (which I gather is called formatting the NAND, or does it just put me into diagnostics mode where I have the option to format the NAND?). At this point I think I'm a little fuzzy and could use some clarification.
This seems to be a fairly popular thing to do. Speaking on behalf of newbies both present and future, if someone could post detailed, clear, step-by-step instructions on how to perform this involved task, we would be forever in your debt. All I read about on the forum is how touchy the Neuros is. I'm afraid to play around to try and figure this out for myself for fear of screwing things up irretrievably.
GarBage, I have yet to take advantage of your efforts, but I would like to thank you in advance for all of the effort you have put into making this excellent device even better. I can't wait to find out for myself how much better.
Also, which version should I install for least amount of quirkiness? 2.26.1.6 or 2.26.1.7, or should I go back even further?

Message: Alright- first of all, the newest GarBage release is free of quirks - minus the database not updating itself after you record. If you just sync again with NSM/NDBM/Sorune, the recording will then show up.
To update:
1. Download woid.hex 2. Put it in [Neuros Drive]:\Firmware 3. Shut down the Neuros with Down+Play 4. Start it up with Down+Play 5. Follow the onscreen instructions.
It should be as simple as that. Formatting the NAND afterwords with 1+5+Play is not necessary, but you can do it if you want. It won't affect the data on your HD, nor will it affect the database.

Yes recordings are added to database. This update has better recording meters. However... I've been having a problem where Sometimes xp doesn't detect neuros and doesn't show up as harddrive in explorer. If I snap off the front piece and hook the usb2 cable to just the harddrive while the power is not plugged in then it does detect.
I don't know if this is related but this is something I have been living with. I spoke with neuros support and they recommended I try the firmware 2.25.
I primarily use the unit for recording so if I have better meters and can get the files off then that's good enough for me for now.

They're probably waiting until 2.28 gets out of beta and goes open source

Message: Also, I think the new firmware team is still ramping up. Once they get going, the trees need to be merged so that there is only one tree everybody contributes to & builds from. That should happen soon.

step by step.... ------------------------------------------- 1. download the firmware file
Easier way is dump a folder on your neuros called "firmware" then dump the firmware file into it..
Power up the neuros and then hold DOWN and the POWER button until it turns off.. DO NOT LET GO OF THE BUTTONS..
Once it's off, let go of the buttons..
Then wait a second, then press DOWN and POWER down first then power.. You should be at a screen asking to flash from firmware found and/or it might ask you to insert the power cable.. -----------------------------------------
thanks tecchie

You can let go of the buttons when it displays the shutting down message.

Unfortunately, i can't test it since i'm still waiting for a hardware replacement. Once i have a working unit, i'll release the new revision.
Thank you all for the interest.

Me too, recently converted to the garbage branch a couple of weeks ago, would love to try out the new version. Also can you turn off the car mode on the new one as my player occasionally turns itself off in the middle of a song if it (i guess) gets a voltage drop while on batt.
Cheers Pybe

No progresses on the recording bug (or any other new functionality) either, for the very same reason. I'll keep hacking on this thing once i have a working N, but unfortunately this is still not the situation right now. And, believe me, no one is nearly as pissed off by that than myself.

I thought I might checkout the branch, compile it for myself and try out the 2.28 features. Compiled it successfully, but couldn't find the new features (the neutris (UI_SF_game.c) and browser (UI_SF_browser.c) files were not there). Am I missing something?

That's sad.
Hope he gets better. Maybe someone with more programming experience than I could merge the two branches in a desperate attempt to keep it alive?
I also have a quick question. I really like GarBage's firmware minus one little thing. I don't like how the backlight switches off while charging. Is there a way to keep it on all the time? I use the brick in the car and it is nice to have the backlight on at night. If there isn't a way, what would be the difficulty level of modifying the firmware?
