Somebody knows if the Neuros II charges via USB? I don't want to carry the AC adaptor from my house to my work

No, it doesn't. There isn't enough power to charge the Neuros via USB.

I popped the backpack off of my 256M Neuros II, and the sticker on the backpack says "Rated 4-16Vdc 400mA Max."

I did some snooping around, and shown here: http://www.starmount.co.uk/s_usbpin.htm

the usb spec should be able to handle 5vdc at 500mA...

so why wouldnt this work? is that sticker just "device wont be damaged within:" warnings?

as an alternative though, there appears to be cheap chargers available here listed under chargers at the bottom:

I think it "tries" to charge off of usb. But here lies the problem, when the USB cable is plugged in, the HD is constantly spinning, eating up more power than its receiving through the USB cable.

I know the battery animation is going when it is plugged in to USB indicating that the unit at least thinks it's charging.

I remember reading somewhere that it's supposed to charge via the USB2.0 socket but the reality is that it doesn't. I popped the player off one night, plugged the USB2.0 cable in for about 12 hours and it didn't charge at all.

Charging over USB sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

With the player disconnected and HDD timeouts in your power management, the backpack will eventually, and slowly, charge. However, if the HDD is spinning or the screen is on, they draw too much power to allow the batteries to charge.

I had to keep my first backpack on life support in that manner for a while, as the power jack broke. (My fault, I think. Still need to get that fixed so I have a spare backpack, though.)

If I had read this before I wouldn't have bought the Neuros.

Is there at least a way to make the neuros use the USB power even if it wouldn't charge the battery ?

I bought my neuros 1 month ago and the battery life is 2-3 hours maximum.

sounds like your batteries have about had it. I would recommend buying a replacement. they are cheap (~$10). I thought they used to sell them on the website, but maybe not. I would call support and see if they will sell you just a battery. in my opinion it would be easier to replace it yourself rather than send it in, but it depends on if you think you can do it.

Well I'm sure I've been shipped a faulty device, there's someting very strange with this battery. This week-end I fully recharged the Neuros and went to my parent's house (80km from my house - 1hour by car), I could play 1 hour with the Neuros, but 2 days after (didn't used my Neuros during that time), when I came back , I tried to turn on my Neuros for my 1 hour trip back to my house and I got this desperating "Power low neuros shutting down". I think that I should check how long I can playback with a fully charged battery without interuption (that's what I'm doing right now). If I can get this 6-8 hours that the device is supposed to last it would means that the device is "spending" power even when it's shutted down. Anyway, the strange thing is that today, I recharged it and it took me less than 3 hours to get the blinking battery symbol telling that the device is recharged. I read in the user guide that putting a full charge on the batteries takes about 8 hours. Is there a way to check the batteries charge level in the Neuros interface ?

In fact I have no choice than to do it myself. I've been shipping the Neuros to Belgium and I have no warranty because of international shipping. The device has been opened and tested at the customs house because there were voice recordings in my Neuros were I can hear people testing the device at the belgian Customs. I've been taxed a 90$ fine at the belgian Customs office for this 400$ device so I don't want to experiment US shipping anymore. So I'm stuck with a nearly useless device for which I paid too much bucks in my opinion. (well the Belgium Customs taxes is not Neuros business, but I would have appreciate that a device shipped to Europe would be tested correctly before the shipping) I'm sure I'll never find a Neuros battery in Belgium.
