what are some good sites or software downloads to use when ripping cd's into mp3's?

audiograbber is a pretty good program. (i also suggest ripping into ogg instead of mp3)

I like CDex. It does good ripping to OGG or alt-preset MP3. Both are about as good as it gets.

By the way, I like OGG too. It seems to give me a clearer, fuller sound. Don't know why, it just does.

will those sites let you download into "ogg" form? and by the way what exactly is ogg and how/why should I use it?

There is a lot of discussion of this if you search the forum. I generally use the dbpoweramp ripper www.dbpoweramp.com
It will rip into mp3, ogg, or just about anything else.

Just wanted to second the choice of CDex. I used to use Audiograbber but I found that later versions of CDex were more in line with what I was looking for in a ripper.

I'll third CDex. I've been using it for quite some time now and I can't imagine needing or wanting something else.

It's easy, efficient, and free.

I like Music Match. Haven't found an MP3 player that won't play a MP3 cd created using Music Match. When I burned MP3 cd's using the windows media player I can't say that..

I've used Exact Audio Copy for quite some time. I tried CDex and found it to be a capable ripper, but I was already happy with Exact Audio Copy.

I've used grip. It's a Linux program, and it has a nice GUI interface. Most of the time, I simply use the drag and drop feature in the Xandros (www.xandros.com) File Manager. When an audio CD is dragged to a folder, XFM asks if I want to encode it, and it offers options that include OGG, and MP3 if LAME is installed. The XFM drag and drop rip and encode is very convenient. A few of the weasel "enhanced" audio CDs (a form of mild encryption) confuse XFM, and I use grip for those CDs. I try not to buy any CDs with such garbage on them. A CD should be a simple audio recording with no DRM or other junk that makes it difficult for me to access the music I purchased.

If I used a Linux distribution other than Xandros, I'd use grip all the time.

I prefer OGG instead of MP3 because I prefer a free and open format.
