The current thumbstick can be hard to use after a long period of time: it is concave and the narrow edge makes my thumb hurt if I use it extensively. A convex thumbstick would be much better for this.

Your thumb would then slip off. I've seen it with an iRiver. Your thumb is supposed to go in at an angle. I'd say about 45 degrees?

I love this thumbstick. Don't press on the edges of it, put your thumb in the middle and slide to the direction you want to go. I find this setup more comfortable than any other joystick i've used.

You are definitely using it wrong. I have never had thumb troubles, even when playing tetris or setting up queues.
