Didn't know the 442 was going to be so difficult to use. But before giving up and shipping it back I'd like to figure it out. I have windows xp; what stuff on the software disc do I need to load onto the 442. How do I seperate what goes to each category on the 442 when drag and drop. How do I get the 442 to play my megs and jpegs from my digi cam once I've droped into the 442? As you can tell I'm pretty clueless. A laymans How-to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rick in SoCal

Wow Rick...please dont send it back yet. it is quite easy.
here is a quick lesson to get you started.
1) you do not need to install anything to the 442 itself, its ready to go
2)you do not need to install anything to your computer unless you have windows 98 or 2000. in that case you need to install drivers for your computer
3) the 442 works just like a hard drive. you plug in the 442 to your computer, and if you have windows xp it will automatically install whats necessary.
4) then you go to my computer and double click the new drive icon that is present (looks like the C: drive...but a diff name)...when you double click the drive it will open up and a few folder will be there.
5)you can then create new folders right there just like windows.
6) you can create a new folder named pictures and copy and paste the pictures over.
7) unplug the 442 from the computer when the files are done transfering and go to the photo viewer and hit the play button...you will then see a list of folders...including the pictures folder. if you open the folder and click on a picture it will display.
8)also if you go to settings, you can set the 442 to slidshow mode...so your pictures will cycle automatically....
9) Oh, and one more thing...read the manual...its poorly written but will help you understand more.
if you have any other questions feel free to ask

Wow that was easy got photos, music and video up. And now the layout makes sense. Now; how do I do convert my mpegs and AVI videos to divx or any format recognizable by the 442? These are just my personal clips not protected stuff. Thanks again,Rick

ah, this is where it gets harder...
it should play your avi files as is...but it may not. if your mpeg files are mpeg-4 or mpeg-2 it should play them also....maybe...
haha...so many maybes...the problem is that it is hard to support every file variation with a device. there is no industry standard...and there are so many.
ok, if they dont work i would suggest that you use the software that came with the 442...the ulead toolbox. from this point on it becomes hard to tell you what to do. you will have to convert your videos into a compatable format. you should be safe if you convert into avi or xvid. this usually takes a while and you should do it overnight while you sleep (4-5 hours per movie...less or more depending on computer speed) you will have to read the progam help if you dont know how to do it...i am actually downloading the program now, so i may be able to help you later.
hope this gets you started....video conversion can be very difficult and is the hardest thing to figure out with any device that play video

oh, one more thing...you can also use a program called Divx converter... it does not have many options but is very easy to use. all you do is drag the video file into the program and hit convert...much easier than the ulead program
you can download it here: http://www.divx.com/divx/converter/
just download the divx create bundle....and it comes with it. the only downfall is that it is only a trial and is not free...but if you like it enough it would be worth buying...it works pretty well for simple conversion

i used to have this problem on my laptop...but after i got my new faster computer i do not have this problem anymore. i think it may be due to a glitch with the program using too much memory or something. if you do not have the computer horsepower...you may have to wait till they fix the bug.
