I know, I know, we shouldn't have used access, but it was handy and I thought it was just a prototype. Anyway, if anyone can help us, I would be deeply appreciated.

We have a simple access database that no longer can be opened, giving only the error

"The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file <name>. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. (Error 3051)"

If anyone has tips on how to repair or even partially recover this database, it would be much appreciated.

Joe

Try using OpenOffice database. It probably won't work, but at least you will feel good about using quality free software. (I am quite sure it is supposed to open Access files. I know it has worked wonders on .doc files).

In my experienec, this has happened when I tried to open a database exclusively, and the database was opened on another machine. That could be the case here. Also, Acesss creates a user file named databasename.LDB that keeps track of any record locks. That file gets deleted when the database is closed down (in a perfect world). If that file still resides in the same directory as the database, then that could be the problem. Delete the .LDB file and then try again. Hope this helps ...
