Hello Joe.

I am a linux/Fedora user. I have an ipod(4g 20gig) and recently I got a flash player from sandisk an E140http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item 1208 -SDMX2-1024-Sansa_e140_Digital_Audio_Player_1GB.aspx

The main reason I got it was that when I plugged it into my comp. It mounted and I just drag and drop and then the unit upon start up read the files and id3 tags and sort by , artist, album, song, year, genre, year. And it can support playlists.

Yes it is a plain jane player... but what attracted me to it was ... that I could just drag and drop and go...

As a side bonus.. the USB port is pretty standard it uses the same one that my camera does which is nice...

anyway.as a linux user... I do not want to use yet another program just to sync my music...

My 2 cents.

The reason for the sync software is that it writes the database entries. On a little 1GB player, you have what...30-40 songs? On my 30 GB Neuros, I have over 5000. It would take an insane amount of time for the device to read through all of the file tags and create a directory structure every time you started it up.

My brother has a 40GB Archos AV700 which rebuilds itself. Actually, I think it just appends new transfers to the current database. I assume it'd take a while for the first transfer, but after that it shouldn't take long.

There was some talk months back about the Neuros creating its own database. Supposedly Joe had discovered a way to do it, but it was never implemented. I'm skeptical of the Neuros' ability to do it quickly. Either way it won't be added to the firmware. I think that firmware development on the Neuros is done.
