That site first influenced my decision on buying headphones. Because of that site, I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 497 headphones (under $70). In my opinion they sound better than the Bose Triport headphones for $150. They also have much more bass then my pair of sony headphones. I have yet to try the Shure headphones available from the Neurosaudio.com web site.

Sony MDR-EX70LP Fontopia Anniversary. Before that, Koss "The Plug." Both have excellent bass. The Sony's are much easier to use (the foam on the Koss have to be squeezed down to insert in your ear), but the Koss are really inexpensive.

I'm currently using a pair of Sony MDR-ED268:: http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/portable/accessories/fontopiartmear-budheadphones/mdr-ed268lp.shtml
I picked them up for about $40[US]
They don't weigh anything, don't make me sweat like beast on the train and they sound awesome!!, and I can even fall asleep with them on at night! Honestly, the range is impressive for the price, I've heard things I've somehow missed on my old HUGE Sony MDR 600s.

I would like to invest in a nice pair of noise-cancelling earbuds like the Shure's, sometime down the line though.

DP, be careful with those EX70s! Between hearing risk and line distortion, you can get one hell of a surprise if your headphone wires venture too close to an electronic device like a TV.

I'm using Koss UR-20's. I've been very happy with them; they sound good, are comfortable, and block out the room noise, which is one of the biggest concerns I seem to have.

They're about $30 if I recall correctly, and sound great for that price. I actually have two pairs; one at home and one at work.

Koss' lifetime warranty is nice, too. I've broken them, and Koss replaced them, pretty much for shipping costs. (I'm hard on things. We'll see how well my Neuros holds up. )

www.headphone.com liked them too. That's a pretty good site; they're not afraid to rake something through the coals.

I am using Sony MDR-Q55's. They are pretty ok sound wise, but they are very comfortable. They have a ear-wraparound design like a phone headset. The cabling appears to be very tough, with a braided material covering. It comes with a relatively short cable, but with an extension. I'm 6'1" and I have to use the extension. I imagine some people may not, or maybe when sitting in transit, could prob do w/o the extra length.

I'd be curious if anyone has had the opportunity to compare these with something like the Shure earphones. Anyone?

Aiwa HP-X223. These were heavily "slashdotted" when some famous blogger mentioned them. For quite some time almost every programmer/html type in every office I went to had a set of these... At the time they were just over $30 and I don't think they were worth it. Decent bass, but they suffer from enclosed headphone syndrome (strange low-mids and a little tinnyness too boot) However... I just found a set on e-bay a couple weeks ago, and I can tell you, for $5... they're well worth it.

A few years B.N. (Before Neuros) I used a nice set of Sony 7506 for everything. Sadly I don't have them anymore. I think the 7509 were a little stronger in the bass department, but the '06's weren't bad. Still... $100 headphones SHOULD sound good.

Definately recommend the Sennheiser PX200
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=005207

Excellent detail but with a nice level of bass. Perfect for mobile use as the cable is short and they fold up. They don't have noise cancelling (another 100 quid in the UK, ugh) but they block out sound well anyway. Would have liked gold-plated jack but ce la vie. Nearly went for Starkey's choice with the Grado's but I look weird enough as it is ;-)

I'll think about these Sony's that you mentioned. I have a pair of "The Plug" and love them. Well, until the dog managed to break one open. Still works fine though. The only thing that bothers me is the foam from time to time. They're great most of the time, but sometimes, they do some weird shifting. That and they sometimes aren't pleasant to pull out.

I just bought a pair of Sony MDR-EX51LPs tonight. I thought they would be pretty close to the 70LPs, but I guess I thought wrong. The midrange was just missing from them and really subtracted from them overall. At $40 from Best Buy, they are going back tomorrow and I'm just going to pick up a new pair of Koss's "The Plug." Never failed me before.

I still use the UR-20's I mentioned at above at work, but have gotten some Etymotic 4P and an S adapter cable. They're wonderful. I can't say that enough. Wow. A Neuros full of music and Etys made airline travel relaxing and pleasant.

Considering some open, full-sized headphones, but don't know what yeat. Head-fi has way, way too many things to consider.

(And yes, thank you for the nice hot headphone out. We don't usually need headphone amplifiers.)

Has anyone compared the Sennheiser PX-200's to the PX-100's? I have listened to the PX-100's and felt the bass was a little too mushy and overpowered the midrange. I am thinking about buying the PX-200's but can't find any locally that I can listen to. I like the size and the way the PX series collapse for storage. If the PX-200's have a little crisper bass and a better balance between bass-mid-high, I will probably buy them. I don't like real heavy bass, but defineatly want to be able to hear the bass and want it to be crisp.

I have listened to the Shure E2's and like the way they sound in general, but am not too fond of the in-the-ear headphones. A little too much isolation from the outside world and, at least for my ears, not too comfortable (I have tried all the various sizes and types of buds provided with the headphones).

i've been pretty happy with Koss the Plug. however, it definitely pays to go to walgreen's or somewhere and get replacement foam inserts. there are some real soft blue ones that are extremely fine textured and expand slowly enough that you can get them in quite deep. I replaced the tube that comes off the Plug with some I made from electrical shrink tubing. if you flatten out the foam thingie along its core axis, you can punch a hole through it with a leather punch and then thread the shrink wrap tube over that. The foam things that come with the Plug are pretty useless. When i am up and about i use the Plug. when i am sitting around in an office or at home, i instead use a better-quality sealed can like Sennheiser hd 280 pro or AKG 271 s. i always use a portable headphone amp with cross feed. got two, one from Xy computing and one from headroom. the former is more portable.
I just have to say the ear buds that came with the Neuros itself are really terrible. They look like they should be great, but they have a very hollow board like sound. even the Sennheiser mx500, my second portable choice after Plug, is FAR superior.

Like every headphone that comes with a new device, the ones included are usually cheap. The Neuros was no exception.

Go over to headphone.com or head-fi.com and there are a wealth of better choices, and people who'll be happy to help you make them.

"The Plug" are also pretty awful, but they are in-ear canalphones for cheap. The Shure's mentioned here are canalphones like that but are $100 or so instead of $20, and are more than five times better.

Careful, though, or you can spend a lot of money trying to find headphone nirvana. (My canalphones cost more than my Neuros... I can hardly believe I bought them... but they're >wonderful<... *happy sigh*)

I finally bought the Sennheiser PX200's. I listened to the PX100's at Goodbuys, but was not too impressed. Too much bass. Too mushy sounding. The midrange was not well defined either.

After a brief email to "elliot", who commented on them favorably in this thread, I decided to take my chances on the PX200's. I got them for $53 from Best Buy with free shipping. I love the headphones. While not quite as impressive canal phones, they are definitely worth the price I paid for them. Good deep well-damped bass (kick drums and bass peddles sound very nice), good clarity in the midrange (reasonably warm), and fairly crisp highs (although lacking little here). For me, they are a little weak in the high end and a little too strong in the midrange, but nothing I couldn't adjust with some minor tweaking of the Neuros EQ.

Overall, I am very pleased with them. They collapse to a nice size for carrying in my brief case, and have a nice carrying case. They do put a little too much pressure on my ears, but I am getting used to that.

Lots of folks like them. They're comparable to the Shures. I have their big brother, the ER-4's. The Neuros will drive the ER-6 very nicely, I am sure.

I adore the canalphones when I can wear them. They are, sometimes, too much of a good thing, and I wind up missing phone calls or being startled quite badly when someone tries to get my attention.

My roommates have taken to IMing me while I play video games, so they can get my attention. That, or bouncing a Nerf ball off my screen. =)

The Neuros drives the 4S just fine. You don't need an amp with it.

I got the 4P with the S converter cable, so I've tried both.

I've also tried with a Total Airhead amp, and could not tell a significant difference.

The amps are designed to help weakly powered devices like modern CD players. The Neuros did not skimp on power to the headset jack. It's swell.

I tried the a few of the sealed headphones but my ears must be larger than normal. They don't fit under the seal rings.

I bought the Koss PortaPro2s last night. I like 'em! Light and clear. No major pressure points. And not a bad price either ($40).

They look funky but I see why they are desinged they way they are. They curve around the upper part of the ear as not to irritate and stay close to the head.

I'm using Sensaphonics Prophonic IV canalphones ($449) with Xin Technologies SuperDual portable amp ($179). The Sensaphonics are manufactured by Etymotic but to Sensaphonics spec... they are very similar to the ER4P, but have a completely different sound which more closely resembles live monitoring... slightly rolled off high end, better integrated mid and deeper warmer bass. I also use Sony CD3000's when at home, again through the SuperDual. The SuperDual is great because it has a fantastic and very natural sounding bass boost switch, and I always found the Neuros EQ to be a bit disappointing.

My last pair of sony buds served me well, for a year or so..
but they're not comfy anymore. The earpiece has come off a few times and never sits right anymore.
So I just upgraded to the Sony MDR-EX71SL as a cheap alternative before I decide on the Shure or Ety's.

These EX71SL's are damn nice. They finally solved the tangling problem i've had forever and they come with 3 sets of silicon plugs, small-med-and large!
They're my first canal/closed buds so, it took awhile to get used to hearing myself breathe hehe, but once i've got some tracks playing, i total forget about it. The sound is a little bass heavy in places, but thankfully a quick EQ tweak and it's all good.

On my bus commute to and from work, they are wonderous!@ All the yapping around me cuts out!@ They only thing I feel is the beat, the engine shifting gears ehhe.
Again these are very nice and they should be for $45US.
My only complaint is that in heavy rain or if your exercising with them, they tend to slip out easily... So I stopped working out.
They're not perfect but they're a very nice placeholder till Santa comes =)
Thumbs UP!
