I've been salivating into my keyboard for a couple of weeks now, and am about to go up against "She Who Holds The Purse Strings" and drop some bucks on a Neuros. This really looks like one hell of a player, with about everything I want in one. I'm leaning heavily towards the 80G unit, with carrying case, and an extra USB and power supply for work, around 5 bills. I really don't jog or do anything that may jolt the player, so I don't need the flash unit, and I subscribe to the "all the Gigs you can afford" theory of storage. I'd hate to run out of space, and I figure 80G will keep me going a while.

I have one thing I'm a little fuzzy about, even after reading through a lot of threads here and checking out the site in depth. I understand that I load up the Neuros with music through its software (or one of the alternatives) on my computer, and build the database at that time. It looks like adding more music at a later time requires rebuilding the database. Does the music previously loaded still have to be on my computer's drive when I rebuild the database for it to be included in the update, or can I have removed them (burnt the files to CD)? In other words, is the database built off the music files on the Neuros, or off the files in the computer?

The longer explanation:
well as you may find on your own, the easiest way to manage your music is as follows:
-First use windows explorer or equiv. to drag and drop all files into place, putting artists and songs in their respective folders.
-Next install NDBM and then do a rebuild database from within NDBM. this will search all directories on the Neuros and then build a database from the information it finds.

To answer your questions:
You use external software to build the database because of CPU power issues, but you don't have reload any of the existing tracks because it scans the entire Neuros. There is talk of making firmware to do the scanning directly on the Neuros, but with 80 GB that may take a bit depending on how they implement it.

Hope this helps,
-ivel

If you use NSM, the .Net-based Windows Neuros management app that comes with it, you need to have all the music on your hard drive.

As ivel mentions above, NDBM doesn't have that requirement... It builds directly from the player.

BTW, if you just want to add a few songs, you don't have to go through the rebuild process, just use NDBM's Add Songs function.

Thanks for the responses, sounds the way I hoped it would.

Chameleon mentioned NSM is .Net-based. I don't believe I have any other .Net-based apps on my system. Will I need to install the .Net components on my system, or is that just for development?
