I have a few videos converted to WMV v9, but they don't play. The 442 tries, I think. I get an hour-glass icon for a second or two, then it looks like it 'moves on' to the next one.
Reading through the forums, I found someone who said "One thing I noticed, after finding out on the forums that WMV was not supported," but I don't see an actual statement that says that (searching for WMV, I found a thread about older versions of WMV not supported, but nothing about a general statement).
The videos are all 720x480, 30fps or less (NTSC). Can anyone confirm if WMV v9 is currently supported or not? That was *the* key reason I wanted this hardware.
If it is supported, I can try playing with the encoder to see what I'm doing wrong, but I don't want to waste the time if it turns out that WMV v9 isn't currently supported. I know I can use the Ulead software to transcode, but that isn't what I want to do...

After re-checking the files I have on my 442, it looks like none of my WMV9 AVI files will work either. When you are in the video selection screen, in the right side window, do the videos show the codec that was used to encode them, as well as the file information, or do they only show unsupported? Mine show unsupported on WMV9 files, and won't even attempt to load.

The 442 shows says the Video Codec is "WMV3" Frame rate is blank. Video Size is "720 X 480". It does not say unsupported, and it seems like it tries.

If anyone has encoded with WM9 encoder - can you point to the encoder profile you used (the .prx file)?

Are the file extensions .wmv or .avi? I have tried both avi and wmv extensions, and neither one seems to work. I have encoded with WMV9 into a WMV file and into an AVI file, and haven't had a bit of luck with either. DivX runs great, though.

Okay, I found some info regarding WMV. From the user guide, it says it supports "WMV: SP@ML with CIF at 30fps. Use the Video Toolbox supplied on the Software CD to convert video files into these specifications".

problem -- I installed the Video Toolbox, the choices I have are 'MPEG-4' and 'Divx' - I don't see WMV as a choice for exporting.

issue - searching for SP@ML, I found info at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmform95/htm/videodeviceconformancetemplates.asp

for SP@ML, it says:
Maximum resolution 352 x 288
Maximum frame rate 15 fps @ 352 x 288 and 24 fps @ 320 x 240

When the manual says SP@ML, does that mean it has to fit what the msdn page says? ie, no 720 x 480? and is it 30fps or 15 or 24? and what does CIF mean?

Has ANYONE successfully used the Windows Media Encoder to encode WMV v9 videos for the 442? if so, could you either post your settings, or the profile file (.prx) that you used?

I've thrown every resolution and frame rate at my WMV9 encoder that I can think of, and I still can't get a single WMV9 file to run. Tried toning them down to 320x240 with 15 frames, 10 frames, etc, still no dice.

We answered the question for WMV support in this Thread:
http://neurostechnology.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6449

Briefly the difference between WMV SP (supported by the 442) and WMV ASP (Advanced Simple Profile)(not supported by the 442 yet) is that ASP supports interlaced output, B pictures, QPel and GMC. You will find more information about the acronyms and the compression schemes here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mp4v

I have a few WMV v9 (WMV3) files that play fine on my 442.The difficulty we run into, is that many files downloaded of the internet might have already been encoded a few times with different programs, thus changing the original encoding format (for the Audio and/or the Video, and the interface Audio/Video as well). This is why all WMV v9 (WMV3) files will not play on the 442. The easiest way to deal with this is to unfortunately encode the file once more (ulead and virtualdub will work out well). This will not work out with all files though.

Finally we just added a DRM driver for WMV, here is the link:
ftp://neuros:neuros@128.153.217.9 (Link Edited). Thanks Derek.
We are currently testing it.

I hope that helps.

Johan

for the post above....to get access to my ftp you have to use this...

ftp://neuros:neuros@128.153.217.9

if you just use ftp://128.153.217.9 you will get access denied because you have not entered the correct password...

The link you gave re: wmv support really isn't very informative:

"I had to check with engineering as to what we have licensed with regard to WMV. We have V9 Simple profile and Main profile. I believe this will have some backward compatibility as well. I will look further into this."

I've got Windows Media Encoder installed, and I have tried the "Main video profile," - high , medium, and low, and none of them have worked (those from the "Windows Media hardware profiles".) What I am looking for is details as to what bit rates/resolutions/frame rates are supported. I assumed someone from Neuros would be able to provide the sort of information.

I have had success with the Simple profiles, but if that is all that will be supported, it will not be satisfactory. Those profiles are too limited.

None of these are files I've downloaded -- all of them are my own files I am trying to convert. I know I can convert to Divx using Ulead or Xvid using AutoGK - I am not interested in that. I can automate the conversion to WMV easily - I can't automate the other processes without a lot more work. WMV9 is a make-or-break for me keeping the 442.
