All-
I just wanted to let all 442 owners know that we are testing a new firmware upgrade. The upgrade will add 3 of the most requested features on the survey and this forum: Timed Recording, Pause Recording and a shuffle option for Audio files.
We will release the upgrade and instructions once we have thorougly tested it.
We will keep you updated.

What is the status of the first upgrade item that was promised from the get-go: 640x480 recording?
BTW: if you read the Buy.com description of the 442, one bullet says "Firmware upgrade available at www.neurostechnology.com", later followed by the bullet "30fps@640x240 resolution (will be upgraded to 640x480 via firmware upgrade)" - as ordered and worded, one might be led to believe that this firmware upgrade is already available.
Also, am I the only one that gets a funny feeling seeing the "gamma" version of the recorder being marketed (at a price close to our Woot net cost) to the general public? |

How about 'resume playback from where I left off'? I want that before any of those features. |

I have to admit that this too is really high on my priority list of wants for the 442. If I stop a movie, I want to be able to come back to it and continue watching it. It seems it would be easy to do with a simple bookmarks file.

YES, resume playback is a MUST. I do not believe playing audio files is the priority of 99% of 442 owners. We buy this because (1) it plays movies/videos, (2) because you can record movies/tv/videos, and (3) you can playback movies/tv/videos on another TV. If people just wanted to play audio files they would buy a much cheaper mp3 player.
I was flabbergasted when I discovered that there is no resume playback. I'm 75 minutes into a movie and get interrupted and have to goto something else. If I turn off my 442 I have to start over at the beginning of the movie and use 16X fast-forwarding to get to the spot in the movie where I left off. If you had 30X FF'ing it might be ok to deal with, but with only 16X FF'ing it is a real pain.
YOU NEED TO ADD RESUME PLAYBACK, at least for the video player, SOON! Seriously, shuffle playback is of little value compared to this video player necessity.

| Obviously, no one who bought the 442 "just wanted to play audio files". However, it seems ridiculous to have bought this high powered, dual core, 40GB, sleek, but still heavy and sizeable item, that requires earphones - and still also have to carry around an MP3 player if you want to do anything more sophisticated than listening to select groups of music in single folders. I want this to be my single multimedia solution; otherwise it could be argued that if I wanted only to record and play video files, I could make much better recordings, at a higher resolution with more control, on a PC based platform (which I already have) and play back on one of the much less expensive playback-only handhelds. |

I still do lug around my MP3 player, and yes, that's pretty sad. However, I am a Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscriber (which is like Napster to go). The list of compatible players for that service is so small, you would not believe it. Maybe, after my year's subscription runs out, I'll go back to buying individual tracks. |

I got my 442 during the WOOT Gamma promotion, and I agree that it SHOULD be our all-in-one multimedia solution. If it was, I would gladly pay the $400.00 for it. However, as it currently exists it does a lot of things but none of them very well. As you mentioned, and I agree with you, it is not a very friendly MP3 player. I suppose if you only had 30-40 songs it would be ok, but this thing holds 40GB and I have about 3GB of audio files on mine. When you couple the lack of any no built-in software that integrates file tagging with the comparatively cumbersome method of scrolling through folders for songs (for example, why in the world does the left rocker button not go back -- it is sooooo counter intuitive that I have to take my finger off the 4 rocker buttons and instead push in the back/exit button) it is practically impossible to access a huge library of music without getting so frustrated that you don't even want to listen to music anymore. I can see why others still end up using their MP3 player separately. The 442 reminds me of the early PDA phones. Yes, they had the Palm OS built-in, yes, you could make phone calls, but they ultimately did neither function very well. I ended up carrying both a PDA and a cell phone for a long time. It took about 3-4 generations of PDA phones before they began to come close to meeting what the public's actual expectations were for such a device. I fear that the same will be true with these portable multimedia combo devices. After I received my 442 from WOOT and played with it for about a week, I realized that it, like those early PDA phones, had all the functions, but just didn't do any of them really well. I was/am hoping that firmware and/or other software upgrades would/will greatly improve the funtionality and ease of use of the 442 during the 6 month trial period.
The comments in this thread and others, as well as the long list of "wants" on the wiki site, show how much further this type of device needs to go before it is truly a must-have device. Frankly, if the 442 didn't have the record-in and line-out features it would be just like a bunch of other devices out there and it's user interface is noticably lacking when compared to those other MM players. That's what sets it apart.....for now. |

| The addition of timed recording was essential for video but why not for Voice? It would be a nice addition. |

Aside from teh bookmark options, is there any other feature you really would like to have? Would a x64 fast forward be an acceptable option?

a 64 times feature would be good but not instead of bookmarks. Can't you just add a bookmark feature? What's taking so long for this option? It should of been one of the first things with the highest priority to add. I haven't even added the first firmware update and won't be adding this next one either because I don't care about any of the updates you have made so far. I and most everyone else are still waiting for bookmarks. Please make this a priority and add it ASAP. I'm serioisly thinking of getting the archos AV700 if this feature isn't added soon.

Actually, the first upgrade that should have been provided was the one promised when the 442 was introduced:
640x480 recording 640x480 recording 640x480 recording
(a broken record metaphor)
Still no mention of that; and now photo viewer doesn't work with the latest firmware. |
