Greetings, I was an early (April 2003, Order: 1534) Neuros adopter. As such, I got to deal with all the fun little quirks which were part of the Beta/Gamma process. ;) I had Hard Drives Die (several times), player crashes, USB 1.1 day long music transfers, and other such fun stuff. I got to bug Tim Artz in CS so many times I think he quit the company.
However, after the upgrade to USB 2.0 things went south when my Neuros literally caught fire (minor), and the circuitry fried. (Picture: http://weirdo513.org/hdbkpk_burn.jpg) The DI people fixed the burned transistors, but the poor thing was never the same and I had to send it in fairly regularly ever since. The last time (about a month ago) it died I didn't even bother to bug the Neuros Support people... I think it’s passed on.
Since I've not seen much on the Neuros III, I've been looking at an iPod Nano for an audio solution. (I needs my music!) But, I've not found anything useful for a video solution... Save for the 442. I had been looking at a Portable DVD player, but that doesn't seem like a great investment if a 442 is in the same price range.
But I'm not really sure I want to go through the entire debacle all over again :) (as fun as it was) Have people been seeing a higher rate of quality with the 442 Units? Is there any estimated time till the completion of the Beta program? Should I look at any other specific video units?
I’ve seen some reviews with mixed reactions. And, I think I like what I see save for the UI, and my concerns are abated by the new UI I’ve see on the http://open.neurosaudio.com/ website. (I assume the new UI would ship before the beta ends?)
I guess I’m just a little gun-shy this time around, any thoughts?

Have you read the excellent full reviews of the 442 at the websites that have been linked in these forums? Dap Review site is one of my favorites: http://www.dapreview.net/news.php
Right Now you can get a 442 from the Neuros website for $369 understand you will need to figure on spending another $99 to send it in and get the upgrade to the 442V2 hardware/open source software platform when that is released in 2006.

Yes I have, as I said "I’ve seen some reviews with mixed reactions." I checked the dap review site to see if their review is up yet, but unless I am blind they have not posted one yet. They have, however, quoted from another review.

I am also aware of this. I was interested in what the current status of the units Beta cycle is, i.e. how long it is likly to continue. As much as I don't mind giving DI my money, I hate to buy something today only to upgrade in a month.
This is not a "I'm too lazy to read the website" forum post, I've done my homework, but I'm asking questions that I can't find answers to and asking about people's feelings on their beta investments, and such. :)

I have only joined the Neuros community recently with the purchase of my 442 but its my understanding from everything that I have heard so far is Neuros really listens to its Customers. They have taken all the feedback both positive and negative on the current 442 into consideration and using it to design the 442V2 to give us the product we have asked for and really want. I have had my 442 for about 3 months now and find it a pretty decent basic piece of hardware. Its not perfect and has its issues as documented on these forums. Its been hard for me to wait patiently for the 442V2 upgrade but Im convinced it will be worth waiting for.

If you shuld have learned anything from these forums by now it's that in its current state, managing your music on the 442 is a frustrating experience. The sound is great, however.
That said, who knows what the future will bring? |

Tim is still with Neuros and going strong
Nobody will call you gun-shy if you are cautious about spending over $300. The current 442 is a solid piece of hardware with great video recording and playback features. We are working on improving the UI (as you obviously know) based on the feedback we received from current owners. If all the requested features are not available at the launch of the Open Source version, it will be a matter of time before it is implemented. So why buy now? You are getting a great player for the money and are eligible for our unique upgrade program (that you have most likely already looked at).

Are you saying that the 442 (as it is now) will get an opensource version firmware, or is the opensource going to be for the 442v2?
As it is now, the firmware needs major improvement for the v1 to fully use the 'solid hardware'. Do you know if Eastech (I believe they write the 'closed source' firmware) is still investing in improving the firmware? Or is the 442v1 in the fridge and is all the effort put into the v2 version you can upgrade to later on. |

Yes, we are still supporting the current version. The 442v2 will have an open source firmware. All current owners of the 442v1 will have the opportunity to upgrade to the v2 if they whish.

I suppose the support for the 442v1 will include firmware upgrade(s) to get rid of some 'nuisances' that have been discussed here many times. (eg. making it possible to do a shuffle play of ALL songs on the HDD and support for playlists ....)
