I have just taken delivery on a Neuros MPEG4 Recorder 2 and wish to use it in my race car. It will be taking the place of a Sony VTR. In testing, the video works perfectly with my Sony 480-line High Resolution Bullet Camera.
But I cannot get either of my microphones to record. One is a 600 ohm dynamic, and the other is a "Super Hi-Gain Mini Microphone" according to the catalog description. It is sold for use with a Sony VTR and worked fine in that capacity.
Any help would be appreciated. I will be leaving for a race event day after tomorrow.
edit: In the above post, I forgot to mention that the Recorder 2 records sound from the TV perfectly so I think it is not the fault of the the recorder.
I meant to say that the "Hi Gain Mic" worked perfectly with the Sony VTR.

Walt,
Your primary problem would appear that your Sony VTR has a mic preamp built into the mic input circuit. You most likely will need a amplifier (known as a mic preamplifier) to boost any microphone audio(electret, dynamic, powered or not) to line level for the Neuros.
Your audio levels from your current mics are insufficient to drive the audio input circuits of the recorder. A quick fix is to buy a battery powered mic (cheap) one with a 30 day return policy on it. Try it, if it works keep the mic. If it does not, return it.

LOL. And how are you going to recognize that a recorder has been used in a moving vehicle .... ? Better forget about this particular warranty void ...

So if I use your recorder on a bus, motocross, mountain bike, skateboard, train, subway, car, airplane, my warranty is void?????

Duke,
On your site under support you have a warranty link that refers to only the Neuros MP3.
This warranty statement does not make reference to thhe 442 nor the Recorder.

Let me clarify this warranty thing. If you look at the last page of your booklet that comes with the unit, there is language that states "This warranty does not apply to units that are damaged by accident". As you all know the unit has been designed to be used in a home. We knew that some of you would come up with uses we had not thought about. We also do everything we can to help you hack our products, which include some quite extreme uses like car racing, skiing, sky diving and even balloon flight experiments (I will add a video about this on our site later). That said, we’re inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt, but if you send us back a unit that was modified, whose casing has been removed, or a unit that was damaged or reduced to a few pieces in a car crash, you can imagine it will be quite hard for us to send you a new unit.

5 volts dc from a car adaptor (using a 5 volt regulator)
+ at center pin
draws about 800ma while recording

As alot of you requested, I have posted a schematic of a mic preamp on my website. It is quite easy to build.
There is also a link at the bottom of the Mic preamp page for Microdisco which makes a nifty little mic preamp.

I found a cheap video camera on Ebay that has a built in mic.
The resolution of the camera is terrible, but the mic has a preamp
that works great with the R2.
For less then $10.
It comes with female RCA jacks and a 12Vdc plug.
Already to go.....
