Serial Interface

OSD Developer Boards ship with male DE-9 [1] RS-232 serial cables, to connect with DVRs, cable boxes, etc.; most of them have female serial ports. However, computers have male serial ports. For the time being, most developers will probably want to hook up to a computer.

To do this, you'll need:

  • OSD Developer board serial cable
  • DE-9 gender-bender (female to female adapter) (included with some dev boards)
  • One of:

If you choose to get the null modem adapter, then your solution is simple: plug all the cables into each other. The order is not important, as long as the genders are correct.

If you choose to manually rewire the serial cable, be aware that you will now have a null modem cable, and thus will require a null modem adapter when attaching to something that is not a computer -- for example, a DVR. All you need to do is cross the red and white wires, so that one side's white is soldered to the other's red, and vice versa. Use electrical tape to isolate both connections, then resolder the copper braiding (ground).

The serial port on the developer boards runs at 115200 baud with 8 data bits and 1 stop bit by default.

1 Although the correct terminology is DE-9 for these cables, you'll often see them in stores sold as DB-9 cables. They're the same thing.
