My OSD reads my powered USB drive fine.  However I tried plugging in my unpowered 2.5 inch USB drive and the OSD won't recognise it no matter how many times I restart the machine and plug and unplug the USB drive.

Is there anyone else who's been able to access a 2.5 inch drive?

I've a 2.5" IBM Travelstar hd in a dodgy unpowered enclosure, and it works fine.

Am impressed too, it's got 4 partitions and they all mounted correctly.

Tho I've a mate whose Sony memory stick (MP3 player too) refuses to work. Dunno why, he refuses to do a scandisk on it!

Just an thought, my enclosure has a cable with one end splitting in two, because sometimes one USB port doesn't supply enough power for a hard drive to work properly. I've never needed the second port, even with OSD, but maybe your hard disk needs more power?

Does the OSD supply the usual 500mA that USB ports should? I failed to check with my multimeter, it must be broke:(

I can power the drive with just the one USB cable when I plug it into my computer. It's good to hear your one works though.

I really hope it's not that the OSD can't supply enough power.

Hi,

how big are the partitions of your unpowered hd? I had bought a 2,5 inch 120 gb hdd two moth ago. When i first plug it into the osd it does not recognice it. Then i delete the one big partition and create four 30 gb fat partitions. Now it works like a charm.

Regards,
Thomas

I have 2 external 2.5" hard drives and they both work now.  The first is a unpowered 6gb from a old laptop and was formatted in fat, it runs fine off the neuros.

The second was a 40gb that would not work when formatted ntfs, but works fine when formated as 2 partitions fat32.

leemajors: Do you get any error messages on the OSD when plugging in your 20G drive? Can you telnet into the OSD and run dmesg? Can even run dmesg from the Console app, but it return a lot of output. It just might help to shed some light on these USB issues.

I stopped trying since network sharing started working, I've now just got a powered USB hub plugged into my laptop with the external drive shared -- letting me access all the files on it over the network instead!

I'm really starting to love my little OSD Smiley Now I just need the video to play back smoother.....

Hey lee,
this was going on in another discussion, maybe it might work for you too:

If you can telnet into the OSD, or (slooowwwly) using the Console, try the command:
rmmod ehci_hcd

Does your 2.5" drive work then? Not sure if change remains on reboot.

To agree, I'm a great fan of the OSD, it's so handy to have all my video files so easily playable in my living room. But jerkiness is still an issue with higher quality rips I've made. MP4s seem to work better than some Xvids, but it's hard to say as these formats are a complicated business.

Greyback and I have been having a related USB discussion on this thread: http://forums.neurostechnology.com/smf/index.php?topic=7873.0  (the "Can't record to nfs." thread).

I posted some quick and dirty performance numbers based on dd timings.

I have a Calvary 500 gig hard drive attached to the OSD's USB and it won't recognize it.  Anyone have any ideas how to make this drive work with the OSD?

We have done quite a few tests with external HDD in the office. As long as the storage media is formatted with Fat, Fat16, Fat 32, ext2, ext3, it should work with the OSD. Hard drive with a NTFS file partition will not be recognized though (you can easily reformat the HDD with a Fat 32 partition using swissknife, see this step by step guide for more info: http://www.neurostechnology.com/pdf/howtoreformatexthdtofat32.pdf )
We have tested hard drives as big as 500GB with a single Fat 32 partition and several Fat32 partitions successfully. See the compatibility page our team created for more info: http://wiki.neurostechnology.com/index.php/Compatibility:The_Neuros_OSD
Also let us know what devices you have been using, you can post information on this page: http://forums.neurostechnology.com/smf/index.php?topic=7956.0 to help us increase the list on storage devices used with the Neuros OSD.

Are these with powered or self-powered drives that you tested with ? or both ?

my OSD will not recognise my samsung 2.5" 160gb usb drive (Powered from the OSD's USB Port).  The partition was already fat32

Thanks

We have tested both powered and usb powered drives.
Does this drive come with a CD with a specific driver? (I doubt it but I have to ask)
Try the following:
Boot up the OSD without the drive plugged. Once the OSD is running, connect the drive. Try a refresh a few times from the Play browse menu using the Xi button. Note that based on the amount of content you have on your drive it cold take a little while for the OSD to go through the directory and show all the files.
If the above does not work, try to boot up the OSD with the drive plugged in.
