I have an 80 GB N2 and a 20 GB N1.  The 80 GB disk on the N2 isn't large enough to hold my music collection and I'd like to put in either a 120 GB or, preferably, a 160 GB hard drive.  Has anyone done this?  What limiting parameters do I need to be aware of before I try  it?

The 20 GB N1 was supposed to be a hand-me-down to my wife.  Before she used it, she was given a 20 GB iPod, which she prefers over the Neuros.  Now it sits, gathering dust with a brand-new battery installed.   Maybe I should use that backpack for a second 80 GB drive for use with my N2?  Will it work, I wonder? :-)

I've not heard anything about a drive over 120GB working in the Neuros, so I would call that your limit unless you want to expand the overall knowledge base.

And absolutely use the 20 GB for the upgrade, that way if it doesn't work, your 80GB unit is untouched.

Well i personally upgraded to a 160GB Seagate hard drive.  Just as long as the specs are the same (minus the HD size).  Everything should work, power consumption might be affected, but nothing major.  Also this will only work with the backpacks that have the USB 2.0, if it doesnt then its pointless.

W00t!  Thank you for that.  Which Seagate drive did you use and what are the specs to match?  Locally (Burnaby, BC), I can get a "Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB 5400RPM ATA100 8MB 12.5MS 2.5IN Hard Drive 5 Year MFR Warranty".  Will that do?

The one i am using is similar, its a Momentus 5400.3 160Gb.  So i guess that will work, battery life wont be the same, but if that doesnt bother you then go for it.

Thanks.   I find the proclaimed 10 hour battery life to be a cruel joke.  I was lucky to get half that with my N1.  The N2 is a bit better but nowhere near 10 hours.  Still, I mostly use it in the truck with the car charger or when I'm out walking so I keep it topped up.

How much did you find that the 160 GB reduced the battery life?

Not dramatically, but it will shave an hour or so from your usual playing time.  But if you take care of the battery, it shouldnt make that much of a difference.
