Is there a reason my recorded videos won't play on my iPod Touch or is there something wrong with my iPod Touch?

Are you using the proper settings, which is 320x240 30fps @ Fine or Super Fine quality?  Also are you synchronizing the videos through iTunes?

We know recordings work with the new Nano and iPod, so i dont think it should be any different.

Well that setting should work well, are you uploading them through iTunes, also try the 320x240 30fps setting, and see if that works.

If you use 640x480, y0u'll probably have to tell iTunes to convert the movie for the iPod Touch/iPhone.  It will probably convert it to a 480x360 resolution, or something along those lines.  I don't think it can downsize on the fly since it has a max width of 480.

Thanks, but now I have discovered 320x240 at both 15FPS and 30FPS don't work.

I have one of the first 5G iPods and it has no problems playing 640x480 videos at up to 2,500kbps.  It also deals excellently with any .mp4/aac file in other aspect ratios as long as it doesn't exceed 307,200 total pixels per frame.

I would assume that the iPod Touch and the iPhone could do the same.

So, lets start from the begining:

You're recording the unplayable files with your OSD right?  What version of firmware are you using?  Try updating to the most current official fw (3.33-1.60 I believe).

Try recoring with these settings.  .mp4 video, aac audio (any bit rate should be fine).   If its 320x, under 1000kbps is acceptable, if its 640x you should do at least 1500kbps.  I never do anything other than 30fps.

iTunes can play the files correctly right?  What happens when you try to sync one of the OSD recorded files?  Does iTunes say its not playable on your iPod or does it sync okay?  If it can sync okay but then isn't playable, what is the behavior?  Sound but no video?  Scrambled video?  Something else?

Well I am using the recorder 2. The videos play in iTunes and I put them on my iPod no problem. Than when I try to play them on the iPod it says the video is damaged. I can, also, play the videos on my 5.5G iPod.

Oh, whoops, didn't notice that this was in the Recorder 2 forum, sorry.  Although, it should still work as long as the bitrate is below 2,500 and there are no more than appx 307K pixels per frame.  Have you tried it with 30 fps?  It sounds like it might be an Apple bug actually, if iTunes syncs it to your iPod, it should absolutely be playable.

I have tried 320 at both 15FPS and 30FPS  and that didn't work. All my video podcasts play. It is strange.

Well we have an iPhone here, and the new Nano, and we did some test recordings using the Recorder 2.  For both, we used 320x240 @ 30fps, Fine and Super Fine, and 640x480 Fine and Super Fine.  All 4 played perfectly on the iPhone and Nano.

What version firmware do you have running on the Recorder 2?

Thanks a million guys!  After reading this thread I also was able to solve a similar problem on my new ipod classic 160GB.  The updated neuro firmware did the trick - now everything plays beautifully!  I'm using 320x240.  The bad thing now is that I need to convert all of my older mp4s that I recorded for my Treo in order for them to work on the new ipod.
