I have enjoyed my N2 for 3 long years and now today morning, When I was trying to record thro' line-in, something must have happened. First it failed to shutdown ( Stuck in Neuros is shutting dow), then after a forced reboot, all my music files were gone ! I will accept that as I have a copy on CD/DVD's for at least 70% of them.
Finally I reformatted the HD on my Vista Notebook.
But the problem now is that when I start N2, it reports, "Error 0x2838, Hold Play buttont" without end. I am not able to access the device thro' the USB when the detachable player  is connected to the Backpak. In effect I am not able to use the N2. I am trying to update the firmware, but the screen get stuck in "....Please plug in USB cable and download", though I have copied the latest firmware to the root directory

It has been a frustrating 5 hrs for me today and can somebody help me to recover my N2 please .

The problem is that you re-formatted from the PC.  The Neuros uses FAT32 formatting, and I would bet money that Vista can only format things in NTFS, especially if your Neuros is over 30GB.

You need to start the player in diagnostic mode (Hold 1+5 while pressing play... it can take a few tries.) and then use the diagnostics menu to format the Hard Drive (both Media and File System.) and NAND (Restore Bad Blocks THEN Format.)

And if your music ever vanishes again, first try re-formatting the NAND... It'll force the file listing (database) to re-load off the hard drive in the backpack.
