I have been reading through the forums for several weeks and got a question about the OSD.
Can I rip movies/video from dvd on the computer and transfers it to a portable hard drive and use the OSD to play it on a tv or do I have to play it on a dvd player and record it with the OSD?

Huh, I never tried playing files that were ripped from a DVD.  I usually just convert them to Divx / Xvid to save hard drive space. Interesting, I think I will have to try it.

I use HandBrake on my Mac to convert my DVDs to .mp4 files so I can play on my OSD, mac and iPod.   You lose the menues/extra features and such, but a 90 minute movie will be around a GB with decent-enough bitrate/resolution.

If you are using a Windows machine, I believe there is a version of HandBrake for you too.

handbrake and AutoGK both seem to work.  Make sure you use MPEG-4 as the video codec instead of h.264 for handbrake, otherwise should be fine.

I put some notes on the wiki please edit if you have additions, etc.

AutoGK only does Xvid/Divx in mp3 or Ac3  audio, I'm not sure if Apple supports that.
