Hi everyone,

I recently bought a set of Neuros OSD.  My firmware is 3.33-2.09-00.871 which I believed is the latest.  However, I had problem accessing the Internet.

I tried Youtube application (More Application -- Youtube) but there is an error message saying Network Unreachable - "Unable to connect to the server. Please check your network connection or try again later."

Tried also the Firmware Upgrade application (Tools -- Fireware Upgrade -- Check Now).  Again an error message prompting "Sorry, can't connect to the server.  Please check the internet connection..."

I am able to access Internet from my PC which was also connected to the same router and was also able to ping the OSD using this PC.  I can even access my share folder in my PC from the OSD device.  So I guess both the network and cable should not be the problem.

I had also tried both DHCP and static IP (Tools -- Settings -- Network) but both failed to work.

Is there any additional information that I need to configure on the OSD ?

Btw, I am not living in US.  Does it matters ?

Hopes the gurus can help me out! Thanks

Based on what you've stated, it should be working...

Make sure the gateway address in the OSD matches what you have on your PC, and see if you can telnet into the OSD (u: root p: pablod) and ping back out of it.

Hi Chad,

I am positive that the gateway is keyed in when using static ip.  For dhcp, I had also check that the gateway address is entered and the same as the PC.

I even did what you recommended. i.e telnet to OSD and ping youtube.com (208.117.236.72) and yahoo.com (206.190.60.37) and was able to get a response.  So I guess the OSD is able to access to the Internet.   However, it failed in the application layer.

Would you be able to advise what else I can do ?  Will re-upgrading the firmware help?

What's weird is that I bought two set and both set appears to have the same problem.  (One in my office and the other in my house)

Really appreciate your advise pls.  Tnx

Did you ping yahoo and youtube by name or by IP?  (Perhaps it's a DNS issue?)

Beyond that, I'm not familiar enough with the back-end of everything to say what could be causing the issue...  If you can ping from the shell, you should be able to get a connection from the GUI...  You don't have Port 80 firewalled somewhere, do you?

I would disconnect any software firewall you may have running and test the connection after that. I have had a home network set up where one computer could access the net but the computer with McAfee when turned on would mess everything up. Worth a try I guess.

Hmm,
I'm wondering if your OSD's filesystems are okay. Could you perhaps run fsck on your CF card?
Try to kill all processes running:
Code:
killall deskmon nmsd xmms2d nwm main-menu scheduler lighttpd
(run it twice to be sure - check those commands have completed with "ps -A").
and run
Code:
fsck.ext2 /dev/hda1
Note you'll get a pretty serious looking warning, but I think it's okay to ignore as you've stopped all running processes (and I never succeed in unmounting the card).

I have the same problems here, running the exact same firmware version.  I can telnet in to the OSD, and ping internet addresses from there by IP address, but not by name.  I found that if I edit the file "/mnt/OSD/resolv.conf" to point to my router's IP address, with a line like:

nameserver 172.16.10.1

then I can now ping internet addresses by name from the OSD, and get to YouTube videos from the OSD on screen interface.  Looks like this file edit will survive an OSD reboot too.

I have the same problem - I can access my network drives and files but I cannot access any Internet videos or updates. As I have no real linx knowledge, could someone tell me what shall be the steps necessary in order to try and edit this same file on my OSD?
Cheers!

1) YouTube has changed things on their end, the YouTube feature on the OSD no longer works.

2) Given that, let's make sure it's the same problem...  Telnet into your OSD, and ping yahoo.com.  If that comes back, then you don't have a network issue.

Thanks for your quick reply! Pity for you tube. Well, I bought mine OSD for the sake of playing videos on my TV off my PC and to be able to do an odd recording of programmes when I'm not at home so more or less it does the business.

Well, ping at yahoo.com says "bad address". Same thing with any other web site which I tried to ping by name. A ping at an IP address does return though .

While YouTube no longer works, you know the OSD makes a perfectly decent Internet radio? I'm running ther OSDng firmware, so I don't know if this makes a difference, but plugging directly into my ADSL router with DHCP set up on the OSD... it just works. Wink

Okay, for internet radio, the simplest way is the command line. The GUI can do it, but it is slow and clunkly, so telnet into the box and:
   xmms2 add http://server2.kawaii-radio.net:9000
At will acknowledge after a moment or two.
Then:
   xmms2 play
to begin playing, and:
   xmms2 stop
to stop, and I think:
   xmms2 info

If you don't need a command line, you can also use:
   xmms2 status
which will update with the info of each new song (press Ctrl-C to drop back to command line).

There's some other stuff, Google for "xmms2 command line" for details.

Obviously, replace "http://server2.kawaii-radio.net:9000" with your preferred station. The quickest way is probably to get a Shoutcast station playing on your PC, then see what the 'address' is. Failing that, when Shoutcast displays a "listen now" link, save the file to your computer (it is usually called "listen.pls") and then open it in Notepad...

Best wishes,

Rick.

Could anyone suggest how to fix the OSDng firmware update to 2.55 first? I downloaded 2.52 from the web site and installed it OK, but if I understand correct I need to do an online update to upgrade to 2.55. However it says check your network connection. Is it possible to edit the above mentioned file myself?
Cheers!

I'm pretty sure that it isn't possible to do the (2nd part of) the OSDng installation w/o a working network connection.  You really need to get the networking sorted first.

P.S.  It *might* be possible to edit /etc/hosts and put in a hard reference to whatever  site the "setup" script tries to access (osdren.something or other), but I haven't tried that.

P.P.S.  yes, I know that /etc/hosts is read-only - but there is a way to get around that.  See my other thread about hacking /etc/inittab.
