Title: OSD Remote
Post by: matticus on September 28, 2006, 01:42:50 AM
I'm looking forward down the line to the ultimate capabilities of the OSD and have noticed that the remote lacks an essential button for many users:  a "Guide" button!  Once the OSD is capable of accessing and displaying a program guide allowing people to select their recordings based on the title (Tivo/MythTV-style recording), the users will need a quick way to access that information.

I'm also looking at this from a selfish perspective--I need a button for accessing a content menu for a network media service.

Anyway, I sent off an email about it, inquiring about an official position on the matter, but I thought I'd ask users here what they thought of the following remote changes:

1.  The current, unassigned button (second row from bottom, far left) becomes the new RECORD button, and assumes the red color.
2.  The old record button becomes the new HOME button (possibly colored green to make it stand out, otherwise orange)
3.  The old home button becomes the GUIDE button (grey, as is currently the case)

Beyond EPG functions, the GUIDE button can serve as an "application menu" button so that the actual MENU button still corresponds to the OSD's Main Menu.  For the time being, I plan on using the unassigned button for the "application menu" function--assuming the dead button will transmit a code when pressed, at least.

Feedback appreciated!

It sounds good to me. A guide button is pretty standard, but won't the guide be accessed thru the OSD menu anyways? It will be an app running in the OS. Still, you can probably set one of the 'user sets' buttons to go straight to the guide and skip the OSD menu, if it will work this way.

It will certainly be in the Applications Menu, I'd expect--but it's a primary feature that should not require multiple button presses (and it should be able to be loaded right on top of video being played, for example.

In theory, one could configure a "user set" button to do this--but those buttons don't work and aren't programmable to work at the moment.
