Title: Compatible memory devices (sucesses & failures in firmware 3.20-0.20)
Post by: johnnymac on October 01, 2006, 01:53:10 AM
I have outlined my success and failures with diffent media. Perhaps others will post their results as well as any recommendations.  I formatted all devices with FAT32 format.  Some of this information is mirrored in current BUGZILLA items.

Memory designed to work with the OSD includes:
Compact Flash, Microdrives, Secure Digital, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo, Multimedia Cards
In my experience with the OSD, the memory needs to be placed into the device after a full boot. The device does not seem to recognize memory during the boot process.
If anyone has ideas for a script to force manual memory mounting (vice automounting) I would appreciate any input.

Here are my results.  Out of the box OSD, no upgrade:

-Compact Flash: worked (this is the device I used to upgrade my system to firmware version osd-3.20-0.20)
-USB: Did not work  (hard drives, pen drives)
-Official Sony PSP memory, Memory Stick Pro Duo / Memory Stick Pro Duo adaptor: Did not work

After upgrade to osd-3.20-0.18:
-Compact Flash(256MB): Worked. System would recognize CF whether started with CF in during boot or placed into system after boot
-USB (1 & 2 GB pen drive): Worked intermittently. Never worked if the OSD was booted with the device inserted.  Worked, intermittently, if device inserted after full boot.   Once the devices were recognized they worked without fail.  Sometimes the devices were recognized, sometimes not. ?
-USB (external hard drives. Western Digital powered & Western Digital unpowered notebook drive). Neither were ever recognized.
Official Sony PSP memory, Memory Stick Pro Duo / Memory Stick Pro Duo adaptor (2GB): Memory  was never recognized.
SANDISK  SD Card (2GB): Recognized incorrectly as an MMC card; Neuros would not save to either SD card or MMC card.

I look forward to any other results and good ideas, I was thinking perhaps a small script could be written (similar to restarting PCMIA services /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart  or a mounting script #mnt /media/usb) that would re-initialize external memory.  Any other ideas here?  Johnny Mac

I've only tried a 256mb Lexar CF card, and a Sandisk 1.0GB SD card.  Both worked fine as delivered and when updated to 3.20-0.16

My 2 gig Kingston CF card worked with now problems. I used it to upgrade the firmware. My 4 gig RiDATA SD card did not work. The OSD would see it, but that's as far as it would go. My Sandisk 512mb memory stick did not show up at all. I hope I didn't fry the port.

I have also now tried both 4GB and 8GB CF cards from Transcend.  no issues with either.

As a side note, I was never able to update the firmware using any of my cards while using the XIM menu. Using the emergency update was the only was for me to upgrade the firmware.

After the upgrade my 2.2 GB CF microdrive worked once for about ten seconds then promptly stopped working again..

RITEK 2GB SD - Recognized as an MMC card, but unreadable
Transcend 4GB SD - Recognized as an MMC card, but unreadable
SanDisk 1GB CF - Recognized and gives correct file directory, but accessing any file causes a reboot

Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 250GB disk works well, detected correctly on startup and hotplug.
