Title: OSD with External USB drive
Post by: BigT4187 on October 19, 2006, 07:56:07 AM
Hi all.  I saw the OSD at Digital Life in NYC last weekend and was VERY impressed.  I know that the OSD should play back videos from an external USB hard drive, but I was curious about any real life experiences that users may have.

My plan is to load up a USB hard drive with DivX files for the kids and wife to watch to elimiate the need for stacks of DVDs around that could get scratched.

Any feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Tony

To add to this question, will the OSD work as a powered host, for external drives and devices that get their power from the port?

I have not tried the latest firmware released on the 19th (3.20-0.20.upk  ) however, I have not heard of anyone able to mount the external drive. The latest firmware fixed USB issues so I will report out after I get it downloaded.

the OSD is supposed to supply power to USB devices.  Any USB devices that are not working on 3.20-.20 should be entered into bugzilla and we'll track them down.

I can indeed verify that my USB drive (a 512mb flash drive) worked nicely. It detected it within a few seconds, and I was able to read and modify information off it no problem. Even after reboot, the USB drive was eventually detected (took a while longer as it had to load other modules first).

One annoying thing though is that when you're in the filebrowser menu the USB drive doesn't automatically appear once it has been detected. You have to go out to the main menu and back in to the filebrowser to see it.

Just received the OSD with 3.20.20 installed and was able to connect to my TV & DVR.
Unit recognized a CF card, USB stick, & a generic external USB hard drive.
Drive is a Western Digital in a generic USB case with a build in power supply.
I had a problem with recording to the external drive the picture & sound were out of synchronization same issue with the CF card. The sound lagged the video.
I could play previously recorded mpeg movie files from the external drive with no issues.
The OSD recognized a Sony USB DRX 500, DVD recorder, but not the mpeg movies on the disc, these were the same mpeg files played from the external hard drive.
Any suggestions, that I can try to resolve my issue with the lag, when recording?

i tried accessing a 250gb external usb drive with no luck. well, some luck -- it found the drive, i could access it using the filebrowser, but it told me there were no files on it, which isn't true :) it was a 250gb seagate 7200 ata drive, with a generic powered usb enclosure.

I can report a Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 250GB external hard disk (own power) is working correctly with the 0.21 firmware.
It's formated FAT32. I wonder if the OSD can read NTFS? also how does it handle a few partitions?

Please check again with the 3.25-0.23 firmware.

Hi, Greyback

Now OSD can support  storages which be formatted with FAT32, ext3, ext2, but can not support the storage which contain two different partitions.
Hope can  helps

Multi-partition will be supported in version x-0.24+.

hi,

no i'm still having the same problem with the new firmware. (0.23). it's a 250gb seagate external hard drive formatted with ntfs. I can see the drive in the filebrowser but it won't show me the contents of the drive...

I think the problem may be NTFS.   Can someone confirm if the OSD can read NTFS or just FAT32?

The OSD cannot read NTFS.  I couldn't even find an entry for it in bugzilla.  I know there are issues with NTFS and Linux for obvious reasons, but others with more knowledge should post here or start an entry in bugzilla.

Hi,

After trying to use the OSD, I'm ready to return.

Didn't read my 2gb SD card, but read it when I placed it into a USB converter and plugged into USB port on OSD.

Tried watching 4 video files (various types - xvid, avi, mgeg) - all failed.  Some were out of sync, all stopped dead after several minutes,  all died/froze or rebooted when trying to fast forward.

Not worth the effort or even the $100.  Time to also return the 442 and buy an Archos.

rather than buying a product that clearly isn't ready for production release and then complaining and returning it, why don't you get involved in getting the things you want it to do happen?
