Title: How to create separate files from a camcorder video?
Post by: ccharles on October 19, 2006, 05:52:53 PM
Our MBA program is considering purchasing the Neuros MPEG Recorder to quickly upload video recorded segments to the internet. My question is - suppose you have a camcorder running continuously into the input of the device, I press Record to start recording and then press  Record again to stop recording. I would like that to have created one file on the Flash card.

Now almost immediately I would like to record another file (the recordings are queued up sequentially and need to be separated into individual files) - if I press Record again will the second file begin recording immediately or is there a lag?

Have I correctly understood the operation of the device? Whenever Record is pressed twice while recording (once to stop recording  and once to start recording again) a new file is created? Of the 42 videos recorded one after the other on the camcorder will I easily be able to split them into 42 separate Quicktime QVGA files?

I don't really have the time to edit them separately in video-editing software.

Thanks,
CCharles

Each time you cycle the record button a new file is created. There will be a slight delay of a few seconds between each file, this is unavoidable and common to most recording devices. Your files will be in .mp4 format and will need to be converted to quicktime so aditional software is required. Look around for software that will batch process multiple files to make life easier.

I guess I can embed an MP4 file into a web page in a similar way as you would embed a  MOV file with EMBED or OBJECT?  I'm asking because I want to know if I can avoid that second conversion.

Also, I'd like to get your honest perspective on whether in my case a device like the Plextor ConvertC M402U http://www.plextor.com/english/products/M402U.htm (http://www.plextor.com/english/products/M402U.htm)  is preferable? I just need to split a camcorder recording on MiniDV into a number of three or four minute videos (352 x 240 QVGA) that need to be uploaded on the class website.

This....

...may answer some questions. Probably best to test on a Neuros created mp4 file on your website. Would have sent something but my R2 died a while back and is off for replacement. Someone else can probably supply something.

Thanks dongle!

If anyone out there can check and see whether the MP4 file can directly be embedded into a Web page I would appreciate it. Would it be viewable if one did not have Quicktime?

My R2 replacement should be with me soon, if nobody answers in a week or so I will post something on my website.

AFAIK, the person playing will need quicktime, but obviously one solution is Youtube which will automatically convert, and easily allow you to embed in your page.  Please post a link once you do it, I'd be very curious to see how it turns out.
