Title: many questions! Post by: soulrebel on October 31, 2006, 07:39:39 AM hi everyone,
its been long since i checked neurosaudio.com for news and i was really surprised and happy to see the new products. the only neurosdevice i have is the first player with 40gig hardrive. anyway, here come the questions: 1. are the products available in germany (or at least somewhere else in europe)? i had to order my audioplayer from the us, which not only cost a lot of shipping, but also around 70$ import taxes (which i found out about and had to pay after receiving the package).... i wont do that again. 2. i read through some posts and someone said nfs would probably not be supported (officially) because its too geek. why does neuros spend so much time on "regular customers", when most are geeks; i mean - no offence intended - but the products really arent mainstream, the brand is not very well known, the design looks more like startrek and less like ipod, if you know what i mean. i really think most of your customers are people who care about support for free fileformats and free operating systems, who chose a device because they know that its firmware is open and maybe even BECAUSE it looks a little more like startrek ;) so maybe you should focus on providing more featues attractive to them.... (i think there is a big market of geeks out there) but maybe i am mistaken and neuros has a much smaller percentage of geek users in the us.... 3. where are the "facts" about the device, i.e. which fileformats and codecs are actually supported (what about theora,xvid,x264, matroska...)? how long does it take to boot? what software is used on the device(mplayer?)? if i ever will be able to login via ssh, will i be able to add extra software, code my own, change that which is on it? 4. will it be possible to connect a usb-dvd-drive to the usb-port and play dvds from it (or files from dvds/cds...)? it shouldnt be a problem for linux or any of the standard videoplaying software used on linux.... thats it for now! thanks for making great products and for showing the world, that there are alternatives to the big monopolies in the entertainment industry. greetings hannes Title: Re: many questions! Post by: greyback on October 31, 2006, 11:55:32 AM Here's all I know:
1. I think this will only be on sale in shops once the firmware is of production standard, which at the moment it is certainly not. then hopefully it will be marketed in shops! I also got stung with a €60 import duty, didn't realise that either! 2. I agree with you that probably a majority of customers for this will be geeks, but to have a very successful product, it should appeal to all users. I think Samba support is a far higher priority, as it is supported by everything, most non-geek types will be using Windows anyway. All geek types can set up samba in a snap. And if you're a real geek, you can get NFS working on it without too much trouble. Neuros have limited time and resources, I think it's better is they support samba properly, and not impliment 2 protocols dodgily. 3. I'm not certain of all the codecs that actually work at the moment, check out the product pages and the bugzilla to work it out. There is a list, but it's a little fuzzy! I can tell you it takes about a minute to boot up. It plays using a propietry player, tied to the graphics chip I think. (not certain). You certainly can connect to the OSD using telnet and muck aaround like that, that's one of it's advantages. 4. I don't know if it can mount an external cd drive, but if the 2.6 kernel can do it, I'd say the OSD can. Hope this helps! -G Title: Re: many questions! hm .. can someone officially confirm that neuros products will be available in germany/europe? samba is horrible... anyway if they make sshd available i really dont care, i would then take care of the stuff myself. does the osd have a somewhat useable packagesystem, what does the kernel look like? is fuse available (can i use ftpfs or sshfs?)? why are they using a proprietry videoplayer!? what advantages does it provide, will it support all free codecs, can i replace it with a free video-player? is other non-free software used? is the hardware documented, could i use different software? where can i find more information about these issues, the link given seems to be outdated... greetings hannes Title: Re: many questions! Post by: greyback on November 05, 2006, 05:54:27 PM This link might point you in the right direction for finding out about the video codecs and what's closed source. It goes into some detail, so it's a start.
http://wiki.neurostechnology.com/index.php/DM320 (http://wiki.neurostechnology.com/index.php/DM320) AFAIK, this is the only propietry code that Neuros uses. Unable to answer you other questions I'm afraid! -G |
