Title: Editing videos with Nero
Post by: madhatter on March 11, 2007, 10:03:45 PM
I am using Nero (v7) to edit my videos and it is giving me fits.  Is anyone else using Nero successfully?

My need for editing is two-fold:  I need basic editing (clipping out commercials as well as splicing together multiple files) plus I need to re-code for compatibility with my DSM-320 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=318) media player.  In neither case is Nero giving me any joy...

If I use Nero Vision to edit, then it mangles the output horribly.  The audio seems complete, but the video keeps jumping further and further ahead (ie: the video suddenly skips a minute or so ahead to the opening scene while the audio is still playing the theme music!).  At some point the video has skipped so far ahead that there's apparently nothing else to show and so it freezes while the sound keeps going.

When I use Nero Recode, on the other hand, things look OK overall except that the video begins to drift behind ever so slowly.  Not as noticeable except for longer shows and movies - by the time the end is reached the audio is a few seconds ahead of the video and it begins to look like a badly dubbed foreign film.

I have the newest version  of everything and I've tried out nearly every setting and option in either program to make them work but no luck so far.

Is anyone using Nero successfully?  If so, please throw me some ideas on what I may be doing wrong.  Or alternatively,  tell me what editing tool works for you - I hate to throw away my investment in Nero but watching my videos is more important than what I paid for Nero.  I'd appreciate any help you can give!

Have you tried streamclip?  google it and it does wonders for editing the mpeg4 files recorded by nueros. You can even save to multiple formats..

Thanks for the tip, akts!  I googled it and it sure looks good on (html) paper.  Am downloading it now and will try it out this weekend.  I'll post back my experience after I've tried it.

You are as welcome as I was to the forums that mentioned it after some searching.
Stream clip does everything I need of it.. I record my shows.. edit out the commercials and save as an output file to mp4 with no audio and video synch issues.
I have done over 50 episodes of shows.. from anime to heroes to Battlestar galactica. .. perfect every time.
Hell I even merged all 5 afro samruai eps into one giant flick with no issues. Simple copy and paste of the files.
I hope it works out as well for you as it did for me.
Whomever did this program is a Godsend.. I need to send them another paypal donation!
=)

Nero sucks, always has. It's half-assed software. The other ones that suck IMHO are Premiere Elements (bloatware), and Ulead Video Studio (for AOL users apparently).

If you want smooth sailing and zero headaches, try Sony Vegas 7 coupled with the K-Lite codec pack. It's the bomb pure and simple.

I have a DSM-520, and the Nero encoded files don't play on it. BTW, WMP11 has the media server built into it so you can quit using the D-Link media server. The WMP11 server runs in the background even when WMP11 is not running. There's no refresh delay.

One more thing. If you want your DSM-320 to operate fast and error free, consider using WMV codec. The best setting I have found for streaming is:

320X240 VBR 2-pass 1000 avg. bitrate 2500 max.

Try it, you'll like it!
