Thanks for the input. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this project - I'm thinking about buying one of the current models regardless as there are some philosophical things I appreciate about the device over the Hauppauge MVP devices.
Your comments on HD are well-received. I'm not as interested in full 1920x1080 playback as I am in the availability of digital connections. For my part, I do store and stream full DVD quality (720x480). Three 500GB drives capable of storing 1TB of data in a RAID5 array are available for a pretty reasonable sum (<$140/drive) these days. That's enough to store a couple hundred movies. And storage just keeps getting cheaper.

I agree. I would buy several of these in a heartbeat to replace my Hauppauge MediaMVPs if they had SPDIF and DVI (not necessarily HDMI) or Component hardware and the ability to decode at least AC3 audio streams and MPEG-2 video. Right now I stream MPEG-2/MP2 files to the MediaMVPs either directly or transcoded (on-the-fly) from H.264 files.
I'm thinking about getting an Apple TV, but I don't relish the lock-in. I have an Xbox 360, but it's streaming capabilities continue to annoy me (cannot play H.264 files through Media Center and I can't even get the H.264 files I have created with Handbrake to work as they should in the Dashboard).
Put digital video and audio connections in this bad boy, and you have no real competitor.
