Benchtop testing of this connector reveals no intermittents.  Soon I'll post the results of an actual test in the field!

It worked fine in the field.  The moral of the story is that you've got to try different 5.5 x 2.1 connectors until you find one that fits snugly.

Mouser.com  stocks the right connector for the R2 and it is a locking one.

You can find it under DC connectors (Kobiconn is the manufacturer)

I just drilled a small hole in the back of my unit (I took the circuit board out first) and ran 2 small wires in and soldered them to the bottom of the DC plug, no messing around to find the right part
