I've gone through the manual step by step and also read through the forum. My problem is when trying to broadcast, I get no joy. Obvious it isn't working because when playing a tune, when trying to change or adjust the frequency - moving the joystick up or down, I get volume adjustment (with earphones unplugged!).

I'm new to this so I may be missing something. I did go through and make sure autodect is selected in two spots.. under the Settings/My-Fi menu and under the menu available when a tune is playing.

There is no lint in the earphone jack.

One other problem that may be related is when listening to radio, unless I hold myself absolutely still, the radio signal to earphones is lost or very static-y and I am able to regain it by wiggling the jack a bit, sometimes. Yes, the jack is pushed in all the way. I haven't yet played with other earphones to see if they work fine or not.

Firmware seems to be up to date judging by the sync manager.

This is the 20 gig bundle, purchased last month.

When autodecting the radio frequency, if I set the unit close enough to the radio.. a few inches.. then I can actually here some radio interference as the neuros goes through the frequency. So it seems to be doing something at that stage anyway.

Help appreciated! cheers, Jim

Mmm, sounds like it might be a faulty jack. Does music play well from the harddrive, through the Neuros, into your headphones?
You say you can wiggle the jack, can you explain exactly what kind of motion this is? ([as viewed from the bottom of the unit] up-down, left-right, in-out)

Thanks Webkid,

I'm at work now so don't have another pair of headphones right now to play with plus I'm surrounded by computers and communication radios so not a good environment for testing.. but I did just try to fiddle with the jack to answer your question. When the radio signal drops off or becomes unintelligible through the headphones, I don't think wiggling the jack may help as much as maybe wiggling the wire going into the jack (the miniplug).

However, when trying it, (by placing my thumb on the jack plug to hold it steady and wiggling the wire) sometimes it seems to help and othertimes not.. so not sure if it is the headphones/jack or something else. And there isn't much play in the jack plug itself.. it would be difficult to wiggle that - I've tried spinning it and moving it ever so slightly in and out but not much affect. I'll play around with it more after work at home and with different headphones. I'm on Alaska time.

cheers, Jim

Ok, some news.
I took it home from work and tried my different headphones and I get the same radio drop out. It is strange because it is only one of two stations I have here that drops out. The other station is very static-y and not much fun to listen to because of that.

I thought I would try putting on the small backpack (128MB?) and had the same result.. the My-Fi did not work with it either. Take out the earphones and still get volume adjustments.

But, today I took it back to work to play around with it before I throw the thing away. The radio station that drops out still does, but if I hold the unit out the window it seems not to. (A couple stories up.. thinking about just letting go.) Other radios in the building seem to work fine but they have antennas. The static-y radio seems to be working better today, almost listenable. No difference if I hold it out the window.. but much better today. (The frequency for it is 91.3 which works out with the .2 odd adjustments. The other is 96.1, which also works out. Wish for fine tuning so I could see if that is the problem.

But big news is for some reason the My-Fi has started working. I made no further setting adjustments.. just changed the backpack a couple times. Previously I had taken the backpack off and reseated it a few times to make sure that wasn't the problem. I also had pressed hard on it in various places while attempting to get it to work to make sure it had a good connection, and none of those attempts worked. It is just working now.. hmmm. Of course, I have little confidence I can keep it working. But will see if it doesn't let me down again.

Sarcasm doesn't get you a long way here.

If you're not confidant about the unit's performance, send it back. That's why the offer is there.

MyFi tends to work best with some sort of "antenna", which can be as simple as your thumb on the Neuros logo. That may be today's difference, if not, I don't know what to tell you. Perhaps dropping it out of a window would help.

I've seen the discussions on the antenna as I was researching this. I think the MyFi is working good enough for my purposes right now, though I haven't tested it in a car yet. Lots of open airwaves here.

The biggest bummer now is the radio. Partly why I bought this unit was for the radio. Guess I'll look into the forums for other people's experience with it.. maybe this unit is defective. The strongest radio in the area, that broadcasts hundreds of miles, just drops out or becomes very quiet , unintelligible, and static-y. To get it back sometimes I have to change stations, or move the frequency off the station frequency and back again. Don't think it is the jack anymore. Though it seems like if I move the neuros around in the air/room, sometimes the signal comes back. Just not sure, as it is hard to duplicate exactly what works.

Then guess I will decide whether to send it back.

cheers, JD

The radio is not great. Some areas work fine, others have problems.

It's not good marketing to say this, but it's not worth it to send it in to get checked out. People used to do that, and 100% of the time we found that it was getting the usual performance we get in Chicago.

Sorry for this issue,

K

Thanks for that Kborn. I haven't done any research on the forums yet (I'm at work) about this radio issue, so please forgive this question if it is well covered previously:

Are some of the radio problems that people report and send the units in for checking similar to those I have described?

My girlfriend is already mad at me for my gadgets.. hate to have to add yet another for a good radio. Maybe a future firmware fix or maybe this is more hardware related..

cheers, JD

It's really more hardware related, only minor changes can be done in firmware. I live near Chicago and from my home I get about five stations (only three actually in english). However, when I travel into Chicago I get just about every station, most are excellent quality with no static.

Wow deja vu! I'm having the same problem (minus the wigly jack - least not that i've noticed anyway) It was having the problem when i first got it, but i could sometimes get it to work by reseating the backpack like you said. Also sometimes charging it could kick it into Mifi mode, but as soon as i put the headphones back in i had to do all that stuff again and maybe it would work. I was about to contact support, but it started working again. Then it went on the fritz again after i had this big problem with my Window$s computer screwing it up but i fixed that. Unless someone figures out what is happining I'm gonna contact support as soon as i can remember during the few times i actually can access my email. I've kind of put off doing it though because i don't really use MiFi that much anyway (Except when trying get others to buy one and then it's kindof embarrasing when it doesn't work). I think it has to do with the Neuros not correctly detecting when the headphones are in.

A few ideas i had were (just ideas im no engineer):
*Static buildup of some sort? It seems like a random effect so that would account for the randomness
*Maybe my jack _is_ wiggly but not so much that i notice it

P.S. another way to tell if the neuros thinks it's sposed to be broadcasting is if there is a little transmitter icon thingy in the lower right corner next to the clock.

P.P.S Anyone know how to find your own posts because I've posted several times on this and can't find my old ones to link to. Seaching by subject matter turns up gobs of results (i guess we're not the only ones having a similar problem)
