Ladies and gents (mostly the latter)!

The day has come, and an unofficial build of the Neuros Firmware has been successfully compiled and loaded onto a Neuros! Sean Starkey (who will be posting his instructions at some point) completed this about 10 minutes ago.

What does this mean? Well, it's a giant step forward for all the OSS backers. I don't have many of the details yet, but news is sure to come. The fact is, you can build it' and if you can build it, it's totally yours!

Come over and give us a peek: http://neuros-firmware.sourceforge.net/

That's good news.

I'm just looking forward for the tools missing by us mortals to complete the built.

I doubt Sean dropped the thousands of dollars for a full-fledged TI compiler. It's probably something either limited (a 15 day trial TI compiler has been mentioned) or flakey. Of course, we all have the GCC port to look forward to:

Yes, i have a CCS Trial too.

But it does not help much, see:
http://www.neurosaudio.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4536

There are missing custom tools, not included in the fw package, nor the compiler suite, mentioned on the Makefile.

Rite now, that's all i need to get the fw compiled.

On the other way, those brave pals 'targetting a new target' for GCC, are now one of my fav superheros. Good luck!

Gar Bage, the missing tools you are looking for are in the Sourceforge's CVS repository. I just got the tools yesterday and put them in CVS as fast as I could.

Thank you Starkey.

I've just made my own woid_flash.hex

I'm going to update the building thread about those tools.

Internally, we are excited and amazed. Remember, we released NSM and it just hit the ground and died. I guess it really was the .net framework....

Well, so do most cats, when dropped from 14 stories up.

NSM had a big job, and a complicated one. It worked for really small collections (like mine used to be)... but obviously, bigger things take time.

I gotta say though. That same app could have been written in C and saved everybody some grief.

I'm not quite ready to drop an opensource alpha on my neuros yet, but what's the difference from the current official beta? Just that it was compiled outside of DI's employee pool, or have you already started hacking away at your pet-peevs?

Mostly the former. But Sean is hacking away at it now. I intend to muck about and locate that scrolling 'feature'.

Well, whatever we change, let's all remember to set up an entry in the Settings menu to toggle it on/off if possible and appropriate... It shouldn't take too much more effort to make something optional and that effort is worthy because your great new feature might not please everybody, and some might like to turn it off.

Exactly what I was thinking. I would rather disable scrollers. If not, I'd like to fix thim so the don't sail into oblivion.

Well, I don't think we need to start worrying about this yet, but I've been watching the enhancement requests since the line was launched, and I've learned a lot about what people want.

When we are dealing with 80GB of digital audio, it comes out to 20,000 songs at 128 encoding. That's massive. And most of us have recordings in the mix, etc. Point is, the Neuros is designed to be a very versatile tool for many many things. Especially as we enhance features that make it more condusive to the recording hobbyist, or beef up the DJ features (like saving an AB loop to the hard drive). I think some users would like a "Neuros Lite" that turns on and off instantly and it just for playback. The scenarios are endless, you should hear all the ideas we have around the office.

And beyond that, people have needs that contradict each other. Like, for me personally, scrolling titles isn't something I need, and it throws off my scrolling down. But that's just me.

I guess for me the utopian dream is that there isn't one interface that's right for everyone. There would be 10 varieties depending on your user habits. One vision I had is that a user could check out the "custom firmware wizard" and you would type in what you plan to use the Neuros for, and your user habits and what your priorities are. Then it would make recommendations on which family of firmware you should use.

It could never all be in one version, the firmware would be totally bloated. When we first launched, the settings screen on the device had 4-5 items. Now you scroll down, there are so many things listed, they don't fit on the screen and you have to scroll down the Xi menu.

Kathryn, this is just about the same thing that I had thought of with the firmware going opensource. I was excited with the idea that I could build my own firmware with just what I wanted. It really helps with customization of your Neuros.

You get my vote for that one. Also disable DJ features, disable XI, and see if we can't implement a better ogg decoder that can cope with higher bitrates. I no longer lend support to getting the Neuros to play FLAC, I switch my support to getting the Neuros to play higher bitrate Oggs consistently... Ogg Megamix v1 at Q8 is indistinguisable from FLAC for me, and quite a bit smaller. Has anyone consulted Monty at Xiph on how Tremor might best be implemented for the Neuros? Reading the spec on the chip, I refuse to believe that the Neuros wouldn't be capable of Q8 and above. I think it just requires a bit of collaboration, and programming skill that unfortunately I don't have.

Yeah, he did, but I honestly think doing some more of it in assembler would speed up things a little bit!
I like the script webkid posted. I would modify it a little, though:

./configure --enable-vorbis --disable-mp3 --disable-wma --fm-freq-granularity=0.05 --myfi-freq-granularity=0.05 --disable-hisi --disable-multiple-database-bug --enable-xi-everywhere && make

We first need it to compile with GCC, then we can make GNU toolchain compatible make files and stuff.
