Just installed the latest firmware update, and I see a cryptic "DJ Controls" screen. How does this work? What is it for?

Thanks!

It has been there since Firmware 2.21. It's described in that firmware's release notes, available here.

Thanks for the reply. From a practical standpoint, why would anyone need these controls?

Well, it seems the point is now moot since this feature is gone in firmware 2.27 (at least, I can't find it anymore).

Nope, still there (at least in 2.27.0137). You have to be playing something, and have headphones plugged in (it doesn't work over NeuroCast). Then it's in the XI menu that comes up when you're at the Now Playing screen and press right.

As far as when would someone use it? With the speed change, you can use that to beat-match. With the looping, you can play a section of the song over and over to either use it as background in a loop, or use it to learn a section of a song.

You're right. I was coming in to work today and saw the DJ Controls option. I could swear on a stack of bibles it wasn't there yesterday but...

As far as uses goes, you could speed up an audio book a bit and listen to an entire book faster. I know that the speed of the person reading the book in the few audio books I've heard is alot slower than I can effectively comprehend, so that's my .02.

I found an interesting use for the DJ controls. While waiting with my kids in the car for my wife to emerge from the mall, I recorded my kids' ( two girls ages 6 & 10 plus a cousin also 10) antics and replayed at about 25% slower speed. They thought it was hilarious and I didn't get my player back for the entire ride home. The best part was we recorded my wife when she got back in and had a few more laughs.
Looking for any new way to annoy and play practical jokes on people I work with, I thought of yet another use. I record 5 statements while trying to disguise my voice. Then slow it down about 25% and assign each recording to a preset button. I then called my boss and told him I was 'Randy' from the spa and I was confirming our appointment. I also went through what we were going to do to him - massage, pedicure, body waxing, etc. Each statement prerecorded on a different preset. It was quite funny.
I have done this to a few friends and co-workers and have used different scenarios - chinese restaurant waiting for person to pick up order, mad guy with new york accent ( sped up and sounding like a Joe Pesci wannabe) as well as the flaming gay guy from the salon - No offense to the Chinese, Joe Pesci wannabe's, or the flamin gay guys.

Sorry this is kind of long but it was necessary to explain.

Yes, much fun involved. I just wish NA had gotten to work on FLAC, the randomizer, the interface, etc... before they introduced a wholly unnecessary feature such as this.
