I signed up for a marketing group, completed an offer, and got five other people to sign up (including one from these forums), and now I have my free 20 GB iPod. So what do I think? Well, this thread will update you guys as I attempt to compare my 40 GB Neuros I with a free 20 GB fifth-generation (or whatever is the latest) iPod.

I was excited to receive the package and see that it just plain and simple, my free 20 GB iPod. I immediately opened it (after showing it to some friends, of course). Its smaller than I expected.

My package was simple: 20 GB iPod, charger, and USB 2.0 and Firewire cables. I thought it really cool that the iPod had both connection interfaces. I also admired the technology that allows the same Firewire cable to plug into a wall power adapter to recharge the iPod.

So I plug the iPod into my Mac G5 at work and drag some music off my Neuros to the iPod via iTunes. It took longer than I expected to transfer the full 20 GB over firewire. Maybe that's because it was going from one device to another.

The scroll circle thing is cool, and I like that it clicks as I scroll. If people complain about Neuros's buttons being cryptic, they wouldn't like this fifth-generation (I'll just assume that's right) iPod. It turns on with any button, but it took me a minute to figure out how to turn it off (hold down the Play/Pause button—logical, huh?).

The time comes for me to go home, so I put my Neuros in my computer bag and my iPod in my pocket. I sit down in my car, pull out the iPod, and then pause. ... What now? ... I realized then that I couldn't do anything with the iPod. In order to use it in my car, I'd have to purchase an extra accessory to broadcast via FM.

Well, it'd probably be good as a quick note-taker. But wait, no internal mic ... or line-in. Actually, there's no way to record with it unless I—that's right—buy an additional accessory.

So I put the iPod down, pulled my Neuros out, and then enjoyed a music-filled drive home knowing that I didn't have to purchase a single accessory for my Neuros.

So far, I really haven't found any use for my iPod that can't already be done with my Neuros.

Yes, the iPod is incredibly small, which makes it perfect for about the only thing that I can do with it ... the iPod makes a great portable 20 GB hard drive. That's about it.

I should've gone for the free 40 GB Photo iPod. That could have been of some use to me.

So the initial verdict? Anyone want to buy a brand-new iPod?

I thought of that. But then I got what the investor/businessman inside of me says is a better idea.

About 17 guys from my church want to get free iPods after seeing mine. I was going to give a link to one guy so five people could help him get his iPod. And then the next five help the next guy, and then the third and final group for a third and final iPod.

Gratis Network (the marketing company) also has a free Mac Mini deal. Now, I could certainly use a Mac Mini at home. Huey, Duey, and Luey! They're small enough to be a portable hard drive! But the Mac Mini requires ten referrals. The iPod was just five.

So here's my plan: get SEVEN guys from my church to complete offers under me to get a free Mac Mini, and then I GIVE my iPod to that first guy. It's a win-win-win situation! I'll get "back" my five referrals plus two, and will only need three more people to get my Mac Mini; my friend will get an iPod almost immediately (as soon as seven guys complete offers for me), and that group of 17 can still all sign up for free iPods to get three among themselves. Thus a total of four iPods in their group! Unachievable by themselves.

And hey! If you want to jump on and help me get that free Mac Mini, then register and complete an offer here. An easy way to skip all those surveys is to quit your browser after registering and then relaunch to complete an offer. Go for NetMarket, Great Fun, the Lowes thing, Travelers Advantage, or Buers Advantage.

No. They can skip the surveys, but the five people have to complete one offer. The offers are like magazine subscriptions, trial memberships, product trials, credit cards, and such.

It took me only four months of inactive pushing to get my five people. Just about all that I did was post the link in my signature, like I am doing now for a free Mac Mini. Of course, if you have enough friends or coworkers willing to try this, then you've got it easily made.

And BTW, my iPod is still functioning as just an attractive portable hard drive. If I want to actually do anything useful, I grab my Neuros.
