I will. I was looking forward to all the expansion options the backpack design might have enabled. I was especially hoping for a Neuros car stereo that consisted of a "brain" only. I could unplug my portable brain and plug the backpack into the car stereo and be able to navigate using the car stereo's controls rather than fumbling around with Neurocast.
A Neuros stereo component you could plug a backpack into would also have been a really nice product. Home users would enjoy having their entire music collection navigable from their stereo. DJs and other professionals would enjoy a larger display and controls.
Don't get me wrong; I'm still looking forward to the Neuros III, but I'm going to miss the backpack. It was an innovative idea that really set the Neuros apart from other players. Its only drawback was the size. |

| I'm gonna miss it too. If they had the brain as a fully functioning flash unit, rather than needing a battery, it would have rocked. A gig of flash in a tiny form that could turn into massive storage, or add a card reader, or satellite radio, etc... So many options are there, but you could still have a tiny device if you wanted it. |

I for one won't miss it. I'll miss the possibilities - I agree that a small stereo component to plug the Neuros into (a Neuros dock, basically... although isn't that ipodish?) would be cool, as would several other ideas. But it never came to fruition, and so I will not miss the design. I will not miss unplugging my backpack whenever my Neuros freaks out. I will not miss the fear of bending a pin, and I will not miss the size.
So there.

Heck yeah, I'll miss the backpack. Honestly, I can't really see myself buying a Neuros III for this very reason. The backpack design was one of the most innovative features of the Neuros I/II. I don't really care how much smaller the Neuros III is, if I can't take it with me to the gym or while jogging, I'll pass.

Oh, I see what you're talking about - I admit the flash component was very cool, but way, way too big. I wish there were a way to redo the backpack system and keep the small size, but I doubt that's really going to happen.
You could always get yourself some cheapo flash player, e.g. iRiver or iPod Shuffle.

I actually never found myself switching backpacks to/from flash, to the point where my flash backpack now won't take a charge. For me, the draw was always going to be the portability of so much music, and the ability to plug that music into multiple devices.
NeuroCast is great, but in the end, it only has the quality of FM radio. |

I'll miss the backpack for the ease of upgrading/replacing hard drives that it offered. In HD-based players, the HD is first to go. If you can change it yourself easily, that's a good thing. Add to that the fact that you could buy a Neuros 20Gb unit and upgrade it to 80Gb when the need arised without having to buy a new unit.

| I was wondering if backpacks for the Nueros II will still be able to buy, at least for a little while. My 40 gig is nearly full, and at some point I would like to get another one, or even an 80g. |

| I sorta like the two-piece system. Since the brain piece is not as sturdy due to it's screen, if it ever has a problem, you can still use the hard as a hard drive to move files and use it while the brain is getting fixed... |

I like the idea of the backpack, but the implementation had problems. Perhaps for the N4?
I'd love to see stackable backpacks. Small, large, whatever, just let me plug my 40gig hard drive into my I/O module (with that new fancy connector that came out 3 months after the N4) into my extra battery into my speaker pack into my...
Backpacks should have daisy chained like firewire.
Actually, that's a good idea in itself. A Neuros player that takes a CF card (or SD, or better yet both... Much better than the current flash.) and can use a firewire connector to connect to a hard drive backpakc. That has a firewire connector too! It connects to the next backpack... and that to the next, and the next. Customise what you need by buying the right backpacks. High end audio with optical in/out? Get the backpack! Want to use it in a car? Offer a car stereo that can have the Neuros plugged in. It's just another backpack!
True, >1 backpack gets big fast, but not everyone needs portability. Some of us could use a huge but very capable unit, others want a small one with out all that fancy shmancy stuff.

I won't miss the backpack. It was a neat idea, but I'd rather have a single consolidated unit instead of three separate pices to carry around. I am concerned about losing the flash component- as other have expressed- Not only for the ability to take it jogging, but also for solid-state recording. I'm hoping the N3 will have a chunk of flash (even just 256meg) and a good built-in mic, for the times I want to record without carrying around other components (and without harddrive noise!). That's what I would miss most.
