This is going to sound strange, but i noticed Windows explorer (under XP pro, current patches) will sometimes jump to 99% of the cpu utilization and make the system almost unbearable to use when the Neuros 442 is plugged in via the USB port. THis happens pretty frequently when I'm copying files using the drag and drop feature of explorer, both from the unit to a location on the c: drive or vice versa. Note, this happens only after awhile, initially it is fine. In all cases, I kicked off a file copy and did something else & came back. That's my standard way to move files as these files are pretty large. I am a computer "nerd" so when this happened at a friend's house I just chalked it up to his computer, but the same exact thing, with the same exact "causes" and symptoms occured, and occurs whenever I use it on my computer. When this happens, I have to reboot the computer [or at least kill explorer and launch it again] until explorer stops misbehaving.
Other issue I'm having is the SD card slot. I moved a MMC card in once, and it seemed to work fine. But since the card sticks out while in place, I had to remove it and re-insert it to get the case around the unit. The second time I inserted the MMC card I almost pushed it in and had to lightly grasp it with tweezers to get it out. I cannot seem to get it to insert like I did the first time, I do have a spare SD card somewhere but I have not been able to locate it for testing.
I have some more comments on the system, but I'm giving it some time to sink in before I respond. When I look on shopping sites, I wonder why people sometimes rate things and say stuff like "I think this looks like what I want".

USB2 achieves it's high transfer rates in burst mode, not at constant rate. Moving large files via USB2 can actually be very time consuming. In video editing, I often move files that are 5GB-15GB and have to use firewire for my external drives. USB2 will move 15GB worth of small MP3 or moderately sized video files much faster than firewire, but give it one 15GB file and it will crawl.
I think it is expected that most people using the 442 will be transfering either small images and mp3 files, or video files that are highly compressed and also <1GB. In that situation, USB2 is the right choice.

the first problem you are having sounds like a computer problem. what kind of usb ports are you using? are they connected to a hub or to a laptop...are your usb ports directly connected to your motherboard? i have seen similar devices but need more details.
When I was a kid my mom used to tell me that curiosity killed the cat...What she forgot to tell me was that it also discovered the cat, invented the lightbulb, and forged the Neuros |

Just to clarify and to give additional information, The file sizes would be from around 700MB to a high end of about 2GB. Certainly reasonable file sizes. Note - I would certainly expect degrated performance during the file copies because of the masses of I/Os taking place.
But this is still happening, even after the file transfers are over. And after coming back to it 10 minutes later, I still have to kill the explorer process or reboot the computer to recover.
>>the first problem you are having sounds like a computer problem. >>what kind of usb ports are you using? These are USB ports on the motherboard, SOLTEK SL-K8AN2E-GR Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb ATX AMD The motherboard has been going for a couple of months now, and I haven't had any problems. I checked the port information in the bios, and the settings seemed OK. This is hooked up directly, with the enclosed cable. No hub is in use. I also did mention previously that this happened on another computer entirely. The same exact sequence. Is anyone else noticing that (if your computer seems slow after a file transfer, do a control-alt-delete (if you have windows 2000 or xp) in task manager -> processes see if 'explorer' is taking up 99% of the cpu for seemingly no reason. |
