Our factory suggested that they believed that Janus and mass storage
were mutually exclusive. In other words, if you support MS's time
DRM, the device can no longer act like an external hard drive when
mounted. Does anyone know if that's true? I guess I have two
questions

1. Is it technically possible to support both?

2. In practice, are there any portables that support both Janus and
mass storage?

This is a pretty important point, if it's really true then it's a good
point to emphasize in our communications since we support mass storage
and drag and drop and that's a big selling point to our crowd.

Joe,

Last time that we discussed this, I thought that there were going to be
3 USB ports: (1) hardwired storage access to the HDD (not involving the
DM320), (2) a host port, and (3) and client port. There are more than
like PHY-related issues to prevent one port from doing all things, but I
thought your mass-storage port was separate from the DM320 USB.

I will make a guess at what they are talking about.
I think that they are saying that Janus will not work with the USB-to-disc scheme that they have been using, because Janus needs that the data be handled in different ways than just mass storage class. Therefore, if you have that chip on, Janus will not wor, and if you don't have the direct-to-disc chip, then you will not be recognized as a mass storage device.

In our board we will have a high speed (480 Mbps) USB Gadget interface using the NET2272.
This will allow both Janus and Mass Storage Class, although the latter is going to be slower than using the direct-to-disc chip as data needs to be moved via CPU.
All it takes is the proper set of drivers.

Greg:
In the development Board I am placing a USB gadget connector for the NET2272 and a USB host connector on the DM320 interface.
I picked the NET2272 because I saw support for it in the 2.6 kernel. Are you familiar with this chip?
How much work would it be to make that code actually work?
How about making the USB host stack work with the DM320?

I hate DRM....i would rather burn to disk and rip 1000 times before i bought a device that made you use DRM (or that had more limited features because it could use DRM). I love drag and drop, and would not want to sacrifice speed for DRM...

The solution might be to offer 2 different Firmware versions and let the user decide whats more important to them.

I really like the Harddrive access thru explorer and would not want to give that feature up.
Other users are going to want to use the player with DRM protected music downloads, Audio books and video rental downloads so its going to be important to them that the 442 supports it.

i agree that alot of people will want to play DRM. I think the 2 firmwares would be a good idea if neuros could handle the task and keep both up to date.
