quote: New Firmware
Here's some new firmware for the MPEG-4 recorder that includes a new GUI and timed recording.
http://open.neurostechnology.com/files/Recorder_NewCode_8_05.rar
Upgrade procedure is the following:
1) Upgrade the boot loader a) Power on the recorder. b) Press “Record” = > “Left Arrow” => “Enter” c) A message will pop up asking if to upgrade the boot loader. Choose “Yes” d) The recorder will power off and then on after the upgrade completes. (2) Then, upgrade the main.hex
I do not understand this upgrade procedure. Please explain more clearly.
Steps I have taken so far: 1. D/L the RAR file 2. Extract the bootload.hex and Main.hex onto a CF card 3. Insert the CF card into the Neuros Recorder, which is currently plugged into a TV (not PC) 4. "Power it on", i.e., move the switch from PC to TV
At this point, the Neuros Recorder boots up to the screen with the 4 squares: "Video Player", "Video Record" "Image Browser", and "Music Player"
At what point/instance is a person supposed to press "Record"=>"Left Arrow"=> "Enter"? When the four-square menu is displayed, I press "Menu" and see the "Upgrade" menu selection for either a CF or SD card. Should I do that? Because the instructions above do not work/make to sense to me.
EDIT: My Firmware is v1.10, purchased from woot! back in February as part of the gamma launch. Do I have to send in my recorder to get the upgrade? |

| I did try it, and using the record > left arrow > enter sequence isn't gettting me to the boot loader pop up message. Is there a specific screen that this should be launced from? After turning on the unit, it defaults to the main function select screen (video player, video recorder, image browser, music player). |

| I appreciate that the .rar format is all the rage with the technogeek/academic types, but I have yet to find a free program that I can use to extract this type of file. Is there one? If not, could you post firmware updates in .zip format as well? |

those 2 links wont get you much. The Rar labs one gives a free command line one, but if your not a technogeek/academic type, you probably wont like it. they have winrar if you want to buy, but it has a free trial. I couldn't really figure out what the other one does.
7-zip does it http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=14481&package;_id=29413 |

use winrar...its a free trial...but it never expires. when it does you just get a message asking you to buy it. You should buy it...but you do not have to.
winrar can unzip most anyfile you will ever encounter
I have also added zip versions to my ftp for non-techies:
ftp://neuros:neuros@128.153.217.9

I couldn't get this upgrade to work. At no point could I get my recorder to update its bootloader.
I tried both a 1 GB CF microdrive, as well as a 512 MB SD card. Neither, with the "Record -> Left Arrow -> Enter" would start any kind of boot loader updater. I tried that key sequence both while the recorder is starting up (with the Neuros splash screen) as well as after the unit has startup and the 4 icons are visible.
I did try to update the firmware without updating the bootloader, and got a "No Program. Version 1.60"
If anyone else gets this screen, here's the procedure (from this thread: http://www.neurosaudio.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5811):
Download this zip file: http://open.neurosaudio.com/recorder/Main3705.zip Unzip and copy both Main.hex and upgrade.log to your CF card. Power off the recorder. Put in the CF card Power on the recorder. It should detect the upgrade.log file, forcing it to look for a Main.hex and attempt to load it. This should get you to firmware 1.01a
Any more info on how to update the bootloader? |

| Now that I have upgraded the firmware, I can't seem to find any screen or menu that displays the firmware version number; is there one? |

I now see on the Wiki that this new firmware was only for the original Woot versions of the recorder. I had already sent my recorder in for an upgrade - so am I going to have a problem now that I have applied this "new" firmware update?
(Maybe this is why I can't find the version # anywhere?)
Update: No, definitely a problem: I don't now have timed recording, and the GUI matches that of the original WOOT recorder I sent in for an upgrade. What are my remedies now? (And the firmware revision number appears nowhere). |

"No Program. Version 1.64" and no attempting to reflash with the new one did not help either.

I've tried Main3705, recorder newcode 8_05, 1.10b and nothing has worked. How long is a "few minutes?" I've waited half hour blocks between each. I followed the instructions but I don't get this. |

When the "8-05" firmware upgrade was originally posted in September, they neglected to mention that it was only for the original Woot versions of the Recorder (the Wiki revised in October to reflect this).
If you have a later hardware version, or have sent your recoder in for an upgrade (as I did), DON'T INSTALL THIS UPDATE!!! (as I did). If you do, you will actually loose all the features the upgrade was intended to install.
My postings to this forum, and emails to support have not yet yielded a remedy for this. |

Thanks Derek:
Any ideas on what I can do to return my formerly upgraded, recently degraded, Recorder to full functionality? |

Im still working on this. although if you do not have any functionality you may want to try the origional for now, so you can at least use it.
you can find the origional firmware and file on my ftp.
ftp://neuros:neuros@128.153.217.9
I am still working on finding a solution for this... this is just something to try if you cant wait. (note: with this firmware you will not have timed recording, so if thats what you really want you may want to wait until i get back to you)

Firmware Upgrade Instructions
New Firmware for the Neuros MPEG - 4 Recorder
Here's some new firmware for the MPEG-4 recorder that includes a new GUI and timed recording.
NOTE: This Firmware version is only for very early versions of the recorder that were mostly sold on Woot! In early 2005. If your MPEG - 4 RECORDER already has timed recording, You already have this Firmware and DO NOT UPDATE Firmware(follow instructions below)
CONTACT support@neurostechnology.com or at 866-5-Neuros IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT UPDATE PROCEDURES FOR THE MPEG-4 RECORDER!
MAKE SURE THAT YOU APPLY THE CORRECT STEPS TO UPGRADING THE FIRMWARE BY FINDING OUT WHICH VERSION OF FIRMWARE YOU HAVE, IF YOU ARE STILL UNCERTAIN ABOUT WHICH FIRMWARE VERSION YOU HAVE, PLEASE CONTACT SUPPORT@NEUROSAUDIO.COM, BEFORE PROCEEDING TO UPDATE THE FIRMWARE. INCORRECT UPGRADE KEY COMMANDS CAN WIPE OUT ANY NEW OR PRE-EXISTING FIRMWARE ON THE DEVICE RENDERING IT USELESS.
IMPORTANT:
IF YOU SEE MINI VMR AFTER THE LOADING SCREEN, THEN YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TIMED RECORDING OPTION(SEE STEPS 3 TO 4 THEN SEE STEP 5).
IF YOU HAVE THE PINK,BLUE AND GREEN MUSIC NOTES AFTER THE LOADING SCREEN, THEN GO TO MOVIE RECORD>PRESS ENTER>WAIT 5 SECONDS>PRESS MENU AND THE TIMER RECORD OPTION WILL BE THE FOURTH OPTION DOWN, IF YOU DO NOT SEE THIS, THEN YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TIMED RECORDING OPTION AND YOU MUST UPDATE THE FIRMWARE IN ORDER HAVE THE TIMED RECORDING OPTION( SEE STEP 6).
http://open.neurostechnology.com/files/Recorder_NewCode_8_05.rar
Please follow these steps to upgrade your Mpeg-4 recorder with a new color interface and timed recording:
1. Before you can update the Mpeg-4 recorder, you must format your CF or SD card through MY COMPUTER or by pressing menu while in the Mpeg-4 TV mode. Any extra data on the card may interfere with the upgrade process, it is vital that you format the CF or SD card first. Deleting previous files on your CF or SD will not format the card. Formatting the card is the only way to completly clear any excess data that may still be attached to the card memory.
2. You must follow these exact steps in order to complete the upgrade process, if you do not follow these steps in the correct order, the end result will be an expensive paper weight.
3. Download the Mpeg-4 upgrade package(Bootload.Hex, Main.Hex, and upgrade.txt(Blank Text) Keep this on your desktop.
a. Make sure you start with a blank(Must be formatted!) CF or SD card first, any other data may corrupt the firmware upgrade process.
4. Copy only the Bootload.Hex to the CF or SD card first (simple drag and drop). a. Switch your Mpeg-4 recorder to TV from PC to access the recorder main screen.
NOTE:
5. If your Mpeg-4 recorder has the text MiniVMR on the top of the main page, then press record > UP arrow > enter, you will see a message to upgrade, select yes.
6. If your Mpeg-4 recorder has a light blue start up screen with multi-colored icons, then press > Record > Up Arrow > Enter, you will see a message to upgrade, select yes. The screen will tell you when the first upgrade has finished.
7. Once the Mpeg-4 recorder has finished the first upgrade switch the TV to PC, then copy the Main.Hex and Upgrade.txt to the CF or SD card for the final upgrade.
8. Switch the PC to TV on the Mpeg-4, then watch the upgrade process, don't be alarmed you will see the screen on your TV will flash and do a vertical roll, this is normal. In a few minutes, depending on which screen you first started out with you will either get a new interface with timed recording or you will will have the same interface with new added feature of timed recording.
9. Please follow these exact steps. If you have any questions, feel free to contact support@neurosaudio.com.
