Hello.
I am thinking of getting the recorder... Question. Can I connect my computer via the USB connector and record straight to my HD?
Or must I record to a SD card and put the SD card in my comp and copy?
It would be nice to go recorder to computer.. directly.
Please adivse ?

As of right now you cannot go straight to your hard drive. there was talk about implementing this in the future, but i am not sure if it will be.

Follow up Questions and thank you for your reply.
I notice there are 2 Recorders. The new one speaking of PSP. What is PSP? And what I can see the new one only supports memory Sticks? ... Would it be the case then that if I wanted to use SD cards that I should stick to getting the First Recorder?
Also...to clarify...if I had a 442 as well... It would be an easy as recording a TV show via the recorder on a SD card and then poping that SD card into the 442 player and watching the video? There would be no inbetween converting of the mpeg4 file or anything?
Thank you for your help.
I ask this due to the number of people that though they could buy a video ipod and just copy files to it and hit play.

PSP - is the Sony portable video game console.
The recorder one uses SD and Compact Flash cards. The recorder two uses Memory Sticks and Compact Flash cards.
So if you wanted to use with 442 you would want to get the recorder one if you wanted to transfer from a SD card directly to the Neuros 442. Of course if you have a card reader in your computer you could just transfer the files to the computer then your 442.
Why would want to take the extra step?
The recorder 2 records to a higher format VGA!
The recorder one only records at 362x240
The recorder two at
320x240 resolution (QVGA setting) recommended for handhelds. 368x208 resolution (16:9, WQVGA setting) wide screen format for PSP. 640x480 resolution (VGA setting) Best quality for TV playback
There would be no conversion in either recorder.
BTW: The Recorder 2 records in a format that can by player directly on video Ipod.

Thank you Keith for your quick answer.
Therefore... Recorder 2 seems the best way to go.
As to Compact Flash / SD / Memory Sticks
Is there a chance of one not being avaliable .. or asked a different way.. is there one that is "leading the pack" ?
I have a camera.. and it uses SD and the 442 uses Sd...
but the Recorder 2 does not... just wondering.. Also when the 442 says it uses SD/MMC ... what is MMC?

One More.. question as I read ....
Topic: understanding MPEG-4 and ASF
Background: I use Fedora Core 3 (Linux). I mainly use TOTEM as my player. I have codec for mpg but it will not play the video of wvm but it will play audio.
Basicly...when I record something via the recorder and when I look at the file on the flash card... will it be a mpg or an asf?

Well I don't any the formats are going anywhere it is just that the 422 uses a SD card because it’s smaller. The recorder 2 sacrificed the SD card for the Memory stick. Compact Flash cards are more popular then SD cards which why I believe it was chosen over the SD cards.
I don’t personally use Linux for except for the business apps so I will let someone else tackle that one for you.
I can say the recorder two is the best option, as the VGA recording is the key for me. But the feedback I gotten from our customers is that the PSP ability it the major factor.

For the different cards, they all have pluses and minuses. SD is ahead, but CF are cheaper and the launch of microdrives is a big plus as you will soon have a few gigs worth of memory (Hitachi already offers 6 GB microdrives). Memory Sticks are Sony's very own standard. If you have sony devices, you will need these cards.
As for which recorder is better: The Recorder 2 clearly offers a better quality of recording (up to full VGA) which is a plus if you want to watch videos on your TV as Keith mentioned. But if you are just looking at getting video content onto a PDA, PocketPC, or the 442, QVGA resolution (320x240) is plenty enough. Also keep in mind that the higher the recording resolution, the bigger the file, thus the bigger the card. The recorder 1, with SD and CF slots, and a USB port is great for handhelds (PDAs, Smartphones, PocketPCs) and has a lower price point. The recorder 2 is perfect for the PSP and people who are interested in higher recording resolutions to digitize home movies. As Joe our CEO mentioned elsewhere, files recorded with the recorder 2 will also play on other Video Players like the iPod, although we have only done a limited amount of testing.
