For fear of sounding like a heretic, we're considering making a recorder that works directly with the new iPod. ie, it syncs directly with the iPod via USB without using a PC at all.
Since the new recorder will run Linux, I know there are utilities that allow the iPod to sync with Linux. My question is how well do they work , and do they co-exist with iTunes on Mac and Windows. Obviously the product won't be very useful if docking it with the recorder screws up the sync with the PC.
Anyone using an iPod with a Linux computer? Experiences?
Joe

My roommate has a 20GB iPod color and uses it with Linux (Ubuntu, I think). I think he said there are plugins for MPlayer and AmaroK that allow him to sync with the iPod. He also has Windows XP, so he could just use iTunes, though there are plugins for WinAmp and there's EphPod for Windows.
Edit: I'm off for Christmas break so I can't check on that right now. I can ask him when I get back to school or I can try e-mailing him sometime, but it seems I can't reply to e-mails with my school e-mail from home for some reason. |

Joe.
I do not own a Neuros.. but I lurk here. thinking about getting one or the N3 when it comes out.
I use Fedora Core 4 and have an ipod 4g that I use with it ...
I use rythmbox to manage my music on my comp. and make playlists.. and then I use GTKpod http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html to sync with my ipod.
I think a recorder that can sycn without a PC would sell hot... since .. it is a pain to convert video to 320x320 on the computer and 1.99 is a bit steep.
I submitt your product to http://www.ilounge.com/ the recorder 2 that is .. as an option... as a news item.. but no response....from them...
anyway... do you have questions?

It's sounds like a smart business move Joe. The iPod needs a good way to 'back up' and/or remove files once loaded. Seems like you could gain some visability with iPod users this way. If you make the N3 a very well designed unit, small in physical size, with a bevy of code support with the same functionality you could win over some of the iPod folks once it's time for them to upgrade. Think of it. Buy and N3 and just 'sync' the iPod to it and move on!
What's that oshifer? I swear dat light wuz ernch. |

Just tossing in my $0.02...
If you want to make a Recorder3(4/5/6) that syncs direct to the iPod:
1) Make sure the interface is simple and allows for easy copy of single and multiple files. (Since I noticed one of the 442 issues is lack of "Multiple File Copy" from a mem card.)
2) Make sure that the same unit works with both the iPod Color and 442. The thing I dislike the most about a lot of technology products is going in for something and seeing "Base unit, plus cable for X. To connect to Y,Z, or A, use accesory kit ____" |

We use ubuntu linux and it connects with the ipod without any difficulty. We have tested ubuntu/kubuntu linux on many different hardware configurations (even 5 year old 600mhz P3) and the ipod can be safely mounted/unmounted and/or accessed.
We typically use the media player amarok to access the ipod, but there are other pieces of software to connect, such as gtkpod.
Just plug and play.
