We just added the last firmware upgrade on our site. This firmware will fix a recording bug (unit locking up after a recording), and the slideshow issues some of you have reported. Follow the instructions included. If you still have the firmware version 1.2.2, make sure you update to version 1.2.4 before installing this new firmware

You will find the new firmare here http://neurostechnology.com/support/Support_442Updates.asp

If you have any doubt about the update procedure, email us at support@neurostechnology.com or call us at 1 866 5 NEUROS.

FJ, sorry i never really got back to you. I tested out 2.0 and it seemed to work fine. No bugs so far that i know of.

When I was a kid my mom used to tell me that curiosity killed the cat...What she forgot to tell me was that it also discovered the cat, invented the lightbulb, and forged the Neuros

I've had this firmware(2.0.0) for few weeks already because Johan sent it to me and it still didn't fix the Green Screen of Death that I mentioned before unless the fw he sent was beta. My version still had no bookmark function or .srt subtitle supports.

I had this too, but is the beta the same as this one? And quit complaining about the features I'm sure they are very busy with the new version, so be patient. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Right, I have version 2.0.0 but that was from something I got from Johan a couple of months ago. Wondering if I should re-do the firmware.

I want to make clear that the firmware upgrade I sent to a handful of people for testing is the same version as the one we posted in the support section of our site a few days ago. We always ask a few users to test our new firmwares (in addition to in house testing) before release.

So basically 2.0.0 has a couple of bux fixes and that's it? I don't mean to sound ungrateful but we've all been waiting patiently for a decent user interface for a while now. I'm losing faith in Neuros and starting to wish I had paid the bucks for the Archos.

The new interface and expanded features most have asked for are only going to be on the 442V2

Neuros discovered early on that the current 442 hardware would not really support the open source direction they wished to take.
They then decided to put there time and resources into a new hardware platform that would support open source rather than attempt to port linux to the current 442.

Neuros is offering reasonable priced upgrades to this new 442V2 when when it releases around early summer.

Well it would be nice if they threw us a bone and added a few features that require little if any additional processing power.

A few that come to mind are bookmarks in videos, elliminating the banner in video record feature so we can see what were are recording, and a personal pet peeve of mine fixing the mistake on the icons on the splash screen such that the camera is for video recording.

jscott1 you are right!!! To say that it has not enough power to change the user interface, it is the better way to make the 442 v2 more important! One interface is already in the 442 and it would nice if you could only change some visible problems an not the hole design with better quality so to say! And i would never pay an additional amount of money to get the 442v2 because there are so many concurrence out there that i can suggest you to go check it a little bit! There are so other marks bringing some nice stuff and i can say that they have nothing to do with the 442v2, so you can see what i mean with it ( they are really better )!

I didn't mean to imply the 442 does not have the power for a different interface.
The feeling was it wouldn't support the open source model and the improvements Neuros wished to make.
The current 442 is closed source and the design and firmware are owned by Eastech.
Neuros or other companies that have purchased this Eastech PMP can choose to pay Eastech for further firmware development and improvements for the 442
Im guessing Neuros didn't think it was cost effective to pay for further improvements to the Eastech model and decided it was better to design there own more powerful hardware platform that would support open source.
Im just a 442 owner like you and passing on the information I have learned from these boards.

im from spain and i own a zolid 920, that is just the same as your neuros 420. i did not get the oportunity to buy one of yours because ive just not found were to buy it.
the thing is the firmware version i had was 1.3.5 and i updated it to your 2.00 and it works just fine, except for no real changes noticed. just that when i boot up it says i own a neuros except a zolid.
does anyone know if there are more firmware releases coming?although i know i shouldent have the privilege because technically im not a neuros owner.
thanks, and sorry if i made spelling mistakes

@Hardman

Hello, I have also a Zolid 920 (but firmware 1.2.8).

Could you tell me if you noticed any improvements upgrading your Zolid to a Neuros firmware?
I am also wondering if there is a place where I could find Zolid firmware upgrades?

:-)

When I signed up for the Gamma testing through Woot we were led to believe that in exchange for shelling out some serious bucks to test the 442 and post our opinions and experiences with the device, we would, over time, end up with an updated fully functioning device regardless of whether we chose to upgrade to the newer open source model. Why should we believe that Neuros will be any more responsive to user needs with the new model when it is apparent that there is comparatively little concern for EXISTING customers using existing products. We are told we can get the new model for a "deeply discounted price" but this doesn't include the fact that we already shelled out $400.00 for a very primitive model with a user interface that it is universally agreed to be terrible. We are/were the early adopters that were willing to help Neuros in its development and now, unless we're willing to give Neuros even more money, we're stuck with a product that is difficult to use as a video player and nearly worthless as an audio player or photo viewer. Please do not become like the cell phone service companies whose model of catering to the prospective customer and ignoring the current customers.

Basic upgrades that should have been included in this firmware upgrade:

(1) video bookmarking
(2) UI change so that user can see full file name SOMEWHERE in the video player, audio player and photo viewer. Right now there is no way to see the full file name and with longer similar file names (such as what one has with television episodes) it is impossible to know which show you select until it plays for a bit.
(3) removal of huge black bar which blocks 1/4 of the screen prior to hitting "record."

We're not asking for much here. Just some basic changes that should have been implemented prior to the Gamma release, but most certainly should be released at this point.

BTW, when am I going to get my rebate check?? It's been MONTHS.

In closing, I appreciate and understand the nature of changing and evolving technologies and know that Neuros is trying to strike a balance that works for everyone. However, the 2 firmware upgrades have done VERY little to improve the usefullness of the 442 to the consumer. Most of us, if not all, expected more and I think we're being pretty reasonable in those expectations.

best regards,
Mark

And don't forget 640X480 res recording, promised on day 1 as the first firmware upgrade.

Do note, also, that it has been months since anyone actually emploted by Nueros has responded to a post like yours.

That is why I returned my Woot-era 442 for a refund 3 weeks ago; supposedly I will be gatting my check any day now.

Yup, I returned mine last week since by the time that Neuros finally releases the 444v2, it will not be worth anything that they would have hope for since you can get a 7" 40GB PocketDish(rebadge Archos) for $399 or $339 if you're a Dish subscriber or the 30GB 4" model for $299 or $249 if you're a Dish subscriber. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Neuros 444v2 in the future if it works as advertised but there is absolutely no reason to keep the current 442 at the $330 price that I paid for it since you get it refurbished on ebay from Neuros for only $189.

I didnt realize you can return it back to woot. Was it simple? I think I'll shoot them an email today and see if I can send mine back as well. Lack of *BASIC* functionality makes this device a nice paperweight.

I received my refund yesterday; it required a phone call to stir things up after 4 weeks (my RMA was "mislabeled" by someone at Neuros) - total 5 weeks start to finish.

You have to request the refund from Neuros, not Woot! The gamma period, and money-back period, were extended as the v2 ship date kept slipping.

Call Neuros for an RMA and instructions if interested.
