Hi Folks,

I was thinking of getting something to record my band practices and my own solo practices, and I was looking at something like the MicroTrack from M-Audio. Then I saw the Neuros -- which would also do the job of converting my old VHS stuff to DVD quite neatly. But the Neuros has got to be able to record decent-quality audio. So what's the deal here? Is the internal mike any good? What kinds of experiences have people had when recording different kinds of music, say classical groups, folk groups -- I am *not* going to be making recordings of my local death metal bands :=) Is the bottom line "get a decent microphone", and if so, does the mic have to be powered?

Generally, any positive experiences with recording high-quality audio would be good. I'm not talking about professional quality audio, but being able to make a recording good enough to post on a website as a band demo, for example.

And can I just make one point about the Neuros and the Specs on the website?

Why does Neuros (the company) concentrate only on the video specs? I don't understand this .. there are *so* few decent audio recorders out there (at least I can't seem to find many other than the Marantz, Edirol and M-Audio recorders) that not even *mentioning* the audio specs of the Neuros 442 on the website seems crazy to say the least. I, as a prospective buyer of the 442, have had to trawl the forums for hours trying to pick up information about the 442's audio capabilities, and *then* trying to figure out if this is current spec or not. It is not easy working out whether a forum posting about firmware actually applies to the product yet .. or in the future. WHat's the deal with WAV recording, for example? No mention in the specs about this -- even on the Wiki page -- but there's plenty in the forums about this.

Come on guys, help us audio hobbyists out here, and post the full specs of the 442's audio capabilites on the website! And *promote* them a little more, would you?

Mainly because the Neuros 442 is a video recorder first and a Audio player second. The second version of the 442 will have improved audio for sure. For what you want to do I would wait for the new version of the 442 and really think about picking up Neuros 80gb mp3 player/recorder. It will do what you want so much better.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply -- I've seen good reviews of the HD 80GB and the price is good, too. But does it work Linux as the host PC? I do not run Windows at home. That would be the first thing stopping me getting one. Second, it doesn't support FLAC, which is another minus: I'm recoding a lot of my music currently, and at some point I would need FLAC support. Is the Recorder going to be updated at all, or is all work now in the direction of the 442? With the 442 I can assume that FLAC support will turn up at some point, I guess.

If the sync'ing works with Linux -- or it is clear to me what the "sync" of Neuros actually is (e.g. database sync with Database X) so I could hack together something myself, then this would be certainly worth looking into. I could then set up my music server to duplicate any FLAC files to Ogg in the background when it's not doing anything else :=)

Last question: I know you ship to Europe, but what's the deal on customs? I am going to need to add Germany's VAT to the price you quote?

Cheers,

Ed
