Once the 2.8 firmware update for the PSP is out we will test our unit here in the office and post our results. Until we do this I would recommend not updating.

The writers over a PSPfanboy, made mention of a new way that the PSP will be able to deal with mp4s,
Did you know that you no longer need to follow Sony's archaic naming format for videos now? Hell, you don't even need to put it in some weird folder, or encode it specifically for the PSP. Any good ol' fashioned (non PSP-formatted) MP4 video will do. Let's take a look:
When you connect a 2.80 PSP, you can create a folder in the root directory called "VIDEO":
Simply dump the file into that folder, and voila! You're done:
Of course they also mentioned that files that are encoded for the PSP will have to remain in the usual MP_ROOT folder.
I of course have steared clear of 2.7 patch, having not seen a need for it after a coworker informed me of the issues he had with neuros encoded movie files, and his location free unit.
But, as the new filing format, will allow for actual names of files, that make more sense than the current file naming system. I guess my real question is will any of the current formats that the R2 uses be compatible with the new naming procedure? I guess once someone says the patch is safe I will upgrade and test out a few formats.

well after talking to some folks ont he psp forums.. a couple have the nr2.. and say that the files are not affected in any way and play fine. So Upgrade here I may come. The said you can even rename the recorded fiel to soem thing liek BSGS1E2.mp4 and stick it into the VIDEO folder and that it plays and recognizes it.. damn time! Guess I will be a test subject for thenew firmware and report back to verify the info. -AcTs

Upgraded after seeing my friend did and used the recorder 2 files on his psp work. So far they work perfectly. I get a kick out of being able to rename my mp4 from the nr2 , and being able to name it like.. BladetheseriesS1E6.mp4 and the VIDEO folder and that the psp recognizes and plays it. MV400001 and MAQ10001 files (like those transcoded by pspvideo9 ) have to stay in their respective folders to work though.. Still a small tep for sony that helps make things alot more organized in how you can read what is on your mem stick.. for mp4 of course. So frommy experience it is safe.. I did it as the new games I will want will be needing the new dang firmware.. but was hoping not to lose the NR2's on the fly recording. Good to see we did not.

| I upgraded my PSP firmware to 2.8 on 8/12/06. My previously recorded programs from the nr2 that worked with 2.71 still work with 2.8 but I haven't tried renaming the files or moving them to the VIDEO folder yet. |

If you have the 2.8 firmware installed on your PSP, you will also be able to playback files recorded with the Fine and Superfine settings for the QVGA 30 fps resolution. Since the files are currently saved in the iPod/PDA folder, you will have to transfer them to the 101MNV01 folder. (transfer the THM files too to make sure you have the Thumbnails). Let us know how that works. We will most likely come up with a firmware upgrade later to make sure you don't need to move files around for playback on the PSP.
