I think expanding the HiSi database to include more international genres of music (spanish was already mentioned) would be the most useful thing IMHO. From what I've seen so far, HiSi works almost perfectly with anything I'd normally hear on the radio, but when I tried various videogame, anime, or jpop songs, nothing came close. (Final Fantasy music is most definetly not Billy Joel). With the coming Ogg/Linux support, I think a large number of international users will be jumping on, as we tend to be spread all over the world, or at least have odd tastes in music. (A few friends I know are pretty big into French pop music).
I realize adding all of this to the database is a pretty big task, so I was curious if a different solution could be used for these "niche" genres. Would it be possible to form a community of sorts around different niche genres, who could submit new entries into the database? There could be a system where people submitted their entries, some arbitrary number of entries for the same song were compared to make sure the entry is correct, and pending official DI approval, it's added to the HiSi database. A similar concept was used by http://www.moodlogic.com, where users submitted their opinions on the "mood" of various songs, which were submitted along with a digital signature, much like HiSi, I imagine. Once a certain song received enough submissions, all the users opinions were merged to form the official database entry.
User abuse is of course the biggest issue here, as opening up the submission process could potentially lead to incorrect entries. I feel that a community based on a small niche genre would be fairly reliable and self-policing, as no one else really listens to this stuff and would bother to screw it up. ;) Users would have to be registered, and possibly approved to submit for a certain genre. This, plus having a DI official compare, say 5 different entries for the same song and making sure they matched should keep the reliability. And it should be less work for you guys, rather than us demanding DI go out and catalog thousands of songs only a select few listen to.
I've got more ideas for details, but just wanted to put the idea out there. |

Seraph-
These are some great suggestions. In terms of adding international content to our database, we have that on our wishlist of to-dos. We are tentatively seeking to have international versions of Neuros in 2004, which would entail us to bolster our HiSi database as well. Your other suggestions (including the "mood" idea) is something we are discussing internally and will continue to chew on. There is a tremendous opportunity with HiSi and we appreciate your input. Keep it coming, SK |
