A few suggestions:
1. It would be nice to be able to jump to songs in the song list that begin with a certain letter. (Note: This makes sense for any of the lists that are sorted alphabetically.)
The best implementation I can think of would be to have the user double-click the FORWARD button while viewing the list of songs (why not single-click? see suggestion #2 below). FORWARD makes sense because your telling it to quickly GOTO something. The option (possibly named "GoTo" and under the 3 top options that relate directly to the currently selected song) would also make sense being in the regular Xi menu too, but it would add several more button pushes to the whole thing, so it would be nice to also have a fast way of doing it.
Anyways, then it would bring up an Xi menu laid out something like:
A-E F-J K-O P-T U-Z
Then, after selecting one of the above, the next menu would show the individual five (or six in the case of U-Z) letters for the user to select from. It would also be nice if only valid letters were shown in the sub-menus. For instance: if no songs start with A, or D, then the sub-menu for "A-E" would only list B,C, and E. But, alternatively (for fewer lines of code to write for now), it could just send you to the next used letter (e.g. in the "A-E" example above, if you selected A, it would send to you the first song beginning with B). I suppose the main menu (the "A-E","F-J"... one) could itself be generated based on what letters were used, but this might confuse more than it helped (except for the case where there are only a handfull of letters used).
Now, some of you are probably thinking about what happens with non-alphanumeric characters. Well, these could be incorporated as well by adding a special-characters option at the top of the list. However, they may not need their own spot on the menu; after all, they sort to the top of the list anyways.
This discussion leads me to two more ideas which I'll list real quick before I forget them:
2. Perhaps single-clicking the FORWARD or REWIND buttons could take you one page up or down in the list (By the way, this is why I chose double-clicking FORWARD for the GOTO feature above). Those buttons are just itching to have a function in those lists...
3. Open-parenthesis "(" should not be considered when sorting. (e.g. "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" should be with the D's, etc.). Maybe other characters should be ignored as well, but that's all I can think of at the moment. I guess this feature could have an on-off switch in Settings too.

For various reasons that aren't worth discussing here, some music you download may have one or more spaces at the beginning of the filename. That shouldn't be sorted by. If possible, NSM should remove those spaces on sync.
To complement this, however, is there a way one could sort a list by something other than alphabetically?
I can already hear the "sort by score" people comming to this thread. |
