I am new to twitter... but it would be cool to auto set the message to
what I am currently watching or doing on the link. The follower
messages should show up somewhere like an overlay maybe. Unobtrusivly
of course.

check out one of the boxee guys.  presumably this is something that
boxee generates automatically:

see tsella's twitter

I'm having trouble deciding what I think of this:

1. twitter seems the wrong place for this, IMHO, why do I want twitter
messages about what someone is watching, listening to?  It's not handy
to my tv, etc.  I'm getting twitters that aren't actionable.

2. twitter is a micro blogging site, I know the definition is evolving, but is this really the intention?  If it was
limited to shows he loved, well that might be something, but this is
everything and it becomes too much I think.

3. I follow someone on twitter for insight or curious thoughts, not
similarity in media tastes.  I follow people on netflix for
perspective on movies, but maybe I'm segregating my communities more than others?

Joe,
That would make or break twitter on the tv... It has to be actionable (like clicking a link that redirects me to content). If it just tells me what my friends are watching thats no big help at all. And I really do not want to waste screen real estate for messages that are technically useless.
