Title: Buttons not answering
Post by: axx on April 04, 2006, 04:49:00 AM
Hi
I got my neuros 442 (updated to the latest firmware) in october over eBay, and quite like the little beast, even though I did file in some polite complaints back when I got it (my first post, but it never was answered by anyone. note to self: don't post long messages or else people don't read them and give up).

So I'm back, but this problem is a little more.. problematic.

The 4 way button and the play button are [i have a dirty mouth]ed up.
Precisely, "up" gave in a while back, then "down" started having difficulties, then "right " gave up and now, worst of all, "play/enter" won't work. So I'm stuck looking at the pretty menu animation, scrolling only to the left, since it the last fully working button.
Every now and then, some of the failing buttons will work, but when you have to tap buttons for 10 minutes (I counted) to get to read a song, it's frustating, to put it mildly.

My unit fell once, in it's protective cover, and didn't show any damage afterwards. It kept on playing fine, and all buttons were responding.
And the buttons problem appeared gradually, first only being annoyance, and now getting to the point where the unit is technically working, but can't be used.

I realise I don't have a warranty as I bought it on eBay, but if there is a trick or anything to make it work, I'm ready to unscrew some bolts and put some circuitry back in place. I'd just like to have Neuros' advice before doing so. :)

cheers

axel

if your willing to take it apart, you might as well.  the keypad may have popped out of place or something.  its worth a try.  that would be my suggestion.  but i would call support first to see if there is anything they can suggest.

When I was a kid my mom used to tell me that curiosity killed the cat...What she forgot to tell me was that it also discovered the cat, invented the lightbulb, and forged the Neuros

Did you purchase the 442 through an authorized Neuros reseller?

well, I finally got around to unscrewing some screws and twisting a swiss army knife.. and for whatever reason I don't know, the buttons are now back to full working condition.
And the warranty that I never had is officially gone! [:D]

well thanks to everyone who enjoyed this thread (cough) and hope this can help someone in the future.. ;)

Good to see you fixed it! I would be too scared to do something like that.

well actually, it seems that after a while, the buttons go back to the same state (same problems on the same buttons), so I have had to redo that trick a few times. Three to be exact.

I'm getting to know the insides of my 442 rahter well by now, but I still feel it shouldn't be a routine thing that I do opening it. You know kind of like "come home, go to the loo, brush my teeth, open up my 300 euro piece of high-tech equipment, change clothes, go to bed"..

any official opinion on what might be happening? remember, you CAN tell me I'm fcuked, I don't have a warranty! ;)

I will ask our support guys. They might have an idea. That said, we have had very few issues with the joystick.

hey FJ, thanks for posting.. [:)]
Well, as far as I can tell, the josytick itself does not seem to have any problems, as when the unit is open (both halves separated), the controls are fine. It's when I put the thing back together that after a while the controlls go fuzzy.
I almost get the feeling that the get "too tight" inside if you see what I mean..
anyway, if the guys have any idea, I'll be willing to experiment!

Ok, I figure the support guys must've had time to think things over by now, so any news about my buttons?
cuz I'm at the state where I can't use my Neuros 442.. even though all the functions are actually working, I can't access them, so the 442 stays on a shelf, and I'm using a CD-mp3 player. Great.
